Wellington Street Fish Bar — Restaurant in Derbyshire Dales

Far too good for my liking and my waistline. I wanted to give a poor review as I felt quite excluded when I was asked to wait outside for my food to be cooked to order, while both the regular ahead of me and the one who arrived after me were cordially welcomed and allowed to prop up the counter as they waited.

Unfortunately the fish, cooked to order was delightfully fresh, with enough but not excessive batter. I am not a chip fan myself (it's all about the fish and mushy peas for me) but I feel cheated if I don't have a couple. And the choice of 3 sizes of chip portions meant I could order just enough to satisfy without wastage. Again cooked to order so no greasy mess.

But the mushy peas! Oh! And oh again! Absolutely wonderful, with an unexpectedly almost smokey flavour.

My waistline demands that I not indulge too often, but as soon as my jeans fit comfortably again, I will be treating myself to another climb...

On a few days holiday up in Matlock and searched on line for gluten free fish and chip shops. After looking in Matlock Bath and not being overly impressed by the one place that catered for gf, we searched Matlock itself. This place came up so headed that way. Right near the top of of very big hill but what a fantastic find. Quite an extensive menu but just went for the fish and chips. Extremely busy with people calling in, orders coming through online and by phone but the small team of two worked very effectively together. Obviously very organised to keep on top of orders and I was super impressed. Sat and ate our fish and chips in the car and it was delicious, especially after a long day walking in the hills. Was in Matlock for a holiday with my whole family. We got a pretty big order. They were so lovely over the phone. I went to pick it up with my sister, they were so lovely on arrival, really accommodating, and very quick with the food. Just Excellent fish and chips, no greasiness, and really nice colour on the fish. The chips were perfect. Really generous with the portions. We also got mushy peas, you can’t really get proper mushy peas a lot down south, and these were really nice. Also got a curry sauce for my now northern older sister 😜, And I got a gravy because I’ve never had it before from a chippy, and it was yummy. Thank you, will definitely come again next time...
