I’m pleased to see another unit on this development has been let to a reputable business. Doncaster is in dire need of choice for its residents and no doubt fish and chips is a popular favourite amongst locals. Hopefully the trade from town centre and also the theatre will make their investment worthwhile.
We visited on a quiet morning to sample the menu. Whilst the ordering process was a little difficult, I must make allowances for new staff being unfamiliar with systems. They will get there I’m sure.
The food came quite quickly and had been cooked to order. The chips were a little dryer than I would’ve liked but visually they were good. Perhaps it’s the current crop of potato as I’ve experienced similar elsewhere recently.
The large haddock was a little overdone so that too was a bit dry. The fish bites that were part of the mix up when ordering were much more moist and were the best thing on the table. Sausages were good, as were the sauces. Drinks were not chilled, so maybe the new fridge needs looking at.
The premises are very clean and modern as you’d expect from a brand new opening. Hopefully it gets maintained well by their cleaning staff to keep its appeal.
The menu is quite broad and varied and next time I will try the masala fish and a few other items.
A staff member was controlling the music and kept messing about with the volume and persistently changing tracks. Maybe a one off as we were early diners but still, it all adds to the experience.
Give it a try, it’s worth a go, and I wish them every success in their...
Read moreReview of Mother Hubbard's Doncaster Mother Hubbard's in Doncaster is a clean and tidy establishment with comfortable seating and pleasant lighting that creates a relaxing atmosphere. The staff were very friendly and provided excellent service. The fish I ordered was cooked to perfection, with a light and fluffy texture and a crispy, non-oily batter. The sausage was also delicious. However, the chips were slightly cool and didn't seem freshly made, which was a bit disappointing. Despite the delicious fish and friendly service, the music playing during my visit was a significant drawback. The genre, which I believe was grime, promotes violence and is not appropriate for a family-friendly restaurant. I would not bring my children here if this type of music continues to be played. Overall, Mother Hubbard's offers good value for money and a decent selection of drinks. I would consider returning, but only if the management reconsiders their choice of music. Pros: Clean and tidy restaurant Comfortable seating Nice lighting Friendly staff Delicious, well-cooked fish Good value for money Cons: Chips were slightly cool and not fresh Inappropriate...
Read moreTried Mother Hubbard’s Fish & Chips in Doncaster, and honestly, it was a bit underwhelming.
I ordered large fish & chips with mushy peas and a curry sauce.
The batter lacked flavour since they don’t use beef dripping, so i picked most off and discarded it onto the tray, though the fish itself was nice and white inside.
Chips were pale and undercooked, which was a letdown. On the plus side, the curry sauce had a good kick and deep flavour, but the mushy peas were pretty bland.
The place was spacious with comfy booths, and the staff were friendly, but it was freezing inside with the front door left wide open due to just eat drivers in and out standing around waiting.
Took about 15 minutes for food to arrive when dining in which seemed slow for essentially a takeaway with seating.
Prices were reasonable, and they had some massive fish options if that’s your thing.
Overall, it's not the worst fish and chips I’ve had, but nothing special either. Life’s too short for average fish and chips—next time, I’ll find somewhere that fries in...
