Trickiest review i've ever had to write! We visited Honiton and the kerb appeal drew us in. Great branding, fabulous internal decor and a lovely setting to spend some time relaxing in. The food and service could not be faulted, friendly staff, fresh food and although not the cheapest in the world it was by far the tastiest food i've experienced for the money! I detected there was a vibe...a vibe of religion...quite a strong one...in fact a pretty glaringly obvious one. No biggy, I take everything and everyone on their merits. Couldn't quite get my finger on what was making my foot itch but my radar for these things is fairly acute. I picked up the flyers and literature available in the deli and read them closely. I held off googling the place until we returned from our holiday today and didn't read any reviews until i had decided what to write. From this point i write from a "post google" point of view.... If i had googled the organisation behind this Deli i would have carried on walking. I'm an "each-to-his-own" kinda guy when it comes to religion but theres a line for me. Their ethos and beleifs simply don't align well with the causes I am happy to spend my money on. If nothing else our visit provided a great brunch and some interesting conversation topics for our dinner table this evening. As for the The Twelve Tribes getting any more of my...
Read moreA group of like-minded people have spent 5 years building the Yellow Deli pretty much from scratch. The result is this wonderful space. I felt at home the minute I walked in. Spent 90 minutes over a lazy lunch, and would have stayed another hour if I had paid more at the parking meter! Staff were so warm, enthusiastic, and not pushy at all - you can tell this place has been a labour of love for them all.
Weekday lunch was very child and baby-friendly, which as anyone with young kids knows is pretty much a guarantee you'll come back.
So, the food. I've had two sandwiches in my life which I knew on the first bite would be among the best things I've ever eaten. One was a pulled pork roll in Toronto, the other a beef and veg banh-mi in Hoi An. Today, I added another: the Deli Pesto. Best sandwich I've eaten in the UK, without a doubt.
(I also tried some of my partner's jalapeno cheese cornbread, which was unbelievably delicious)
Places like this don't come along very often. You owe it to yourself to...
Read moreI always go in sceptical when I find out somewhere I run by a religious group / following, to my own detriment. I was, however; really pleasantly surprised by the experience we’ve just had for an afternoon lunch. The building is like a museum, every feature unique and hand crafted, I even wandered upstairs to view the rest of the building, you would not believe how vast and spellbinding it was. The food was also excellent, the steamed American-deli style sandwiches were full of flavour and really well priced in my opinion. The staff were by far a real joy, there was not one push of religion or lifestyle but a genuine connection with guests, explaining the history of the building, their food, portraying a real interest in their guests and their lives; it felt as if you could sit and have a conversation with them for hours, they were happy to answer all questions and were a true asset. Looking forward to returning...
