Tide Beach Bar & Cafe — Restaurant in East Devon

Me and my family are on holiday here in Devon. We stayed at a lovely cottage in Bronscombe and it was our last day today. And for lunch we decided to go to Tide. My mum decided to treat us to 2 pizzas, some drinks obviously and 2 portion of chips. We decided to sit outside in the nice weather but that's where the problem starts. Wasps everywhere. But to be fair Tide can't do anything about that. But because the wasps kept swarming around me specifically my mum decided it was time to go inside. So she started putting bits inside and as she was coming back out I felt a huge thud and a seagull had landed on the table and ate literally over half of 1 of our portion of chips. My mum picked up the chips that fell on the floor from the seagull and we went inside and my mum asked if it was ok for a new portion of chips. A waitress came and said unfortunately we are going to have to charge you for a new portion of chips and my mum was NOT happy. She then said no and requested to speak to a manager. This man came over and my mum discussed the situation and this man said it happens every day and we can not prevent the seagulls from coming here and we can't afford to replace everything because it would result in a loss of money for the restaurant. My mum makes the excellent point of how it's only a portion of chips that are overpriced anyway (£4.50) and said how we would understand if it was something like a pizza but it was only chips which is something a restaurant can EASILY provide. It doesn't put them at a "loss" at all. 1 portion of chips we were asking to be replaced that's it. Safe to say we will never come back here again when we return to Devon and I advise if you come here you sit inside no matter the weather 😂 it is NOT worth the risk of a seagull eating your food and the staff not willing to replace something that wouldn't put them at a loss AT ALL. Since doing this review I have found out this place has a Food Hygiene Rating of 2 (increased from Zero taking 9 months to achieve even this terrible mark) . After what I witnessed I can see why . And if they displayed the score on the door I would have never used such a place and probably no one else would. Will be the reason why FHR rating not displayed.

Came in on Saturday, place was fairly busy although not much room inside so only 26 customers filled the place. 6 staff to run , you’d think it would be smooth running. Unfortunately not. Manager flapping more than Basil Faulty , staff didn’t seem trained in much. Ordered coffees and breakfast , had to pay in advance and no table service . 12 minutes to get coffee , waited another 19 minutes and still no breakfast. Went to counter to find out and manager had taken his flapping into kitchen to help chef who was flapping even more as to busy for him to cope ( 26 customers and probably only half ordered food ) . If this is way now god only knows how it will be if really busy. Food eventually arrived, worst breakfast I’ve seen , eggs Benedict ( no ham just poached eggs on muffin and hollandaise ) rock hard eggs and cold , tide bfast appalling deep fried sausages and bacon ,plate covered in grease and finger marks. Has Seaton turned into a little London with extortionate prices and appalling service. Sat outside no table service ( realised after 5 mins when staff had completely ignored us ) no menus, went inside to get one , then had to go back in to order and pay ( don’t forget your table no or you’ll be sent back to get like a chastised child) collect your own cutlery, collect your own condiments wait 10 mins for your drinks wait another 30 mins for the food . The only thing you didn’t do was cook for yourself, shame really, as my 10 year old could have done better. 2 pizzas burnt 1 cheeseburger bone dry and cheese grilled so long turned to oil and 1 fish burger ( a tiny piece of square processed frozen fish deep fried to oblivion) absolutely appalling. Spoke to young waitress who took plates away to get things rectified , nothing done . Went in to speak to counter staff to complain who said she had gone on a break and hadn’t told anyone so nothing they could do now.
