The Railway Inn — Restaurant in East Suffolk

We had a holiday rental property just around the corner from The Railway hence the title of this review. We called in on a Sunday specifically to watch a football match and couldn't have got a better welcome. Karl and Shirl as we found out were the perfect landlord and lady. Forget the current trend for "Gastro" pubs or Sunday Carvery microwave meals this is a proper pub. By the end of our visit we felt like it had been our local for years! Shirl made a point of asking our names and more to the point remembered them and to me this is always a good sign of someone who knows the meaning of good customer service. Sadly a trend lacking in many of the aforementioned Gastro establishments. She was aware that we had come in to watch the footie and made sure we had a prime position across from the second of two TV screens. Great service, great atmosphere and a very welcoming place. Looking at the other reviews on this pub, it certainly doesn't sound like the one we went into yesterday. The whole place was unkept, sorry to say this, but a bit grubby too. The decor left a lot to be desired and it looked as if it hadn't been decorated for a good few years. We were going to have something to eat, but there were dogs in the pub and dining room belonging I think to the owner. It actually smelt doggy. One dog was sitting on a settee iin the public bar.The landlord was very rude and abrupt when we asked where to sit to eat, we decided there and then not to eat there. We sat at a table to finish our drinks and he pushed past and put the TV on. I know people love their pets but its unhygienic to have pets in a place where you serve food. Sorry but this place got a thumbs down 👎 from us and I certainly wouldn't recommend eating or drinking there....
