Had high hopes for this place, especially as it was rated so highly and the only vegan/vegetarian restaurant in Eastbourne. However the fact there is no competition is clearly the reason it's rated so highly. l invite all the reviewers to come up to London and try the vegan food we have here which is delicious, flavourful and you'll actually get good service with it. My partner's mojito was basically a soda water with 2 ice cubes and a mint leaf chucked in. He sent it back and asked for a coke instead and the delightful manager decided she would still charge us for it and the coke. When my partner questioned why we were charged for something we sent back he was told 'because there was nothing wrong with it' - absolutely abysmal to not take that off the bill. Let's talk about the food. Chickn satay was served as 2 sticks with minuscule aubergine pieces, a few pieces of chickn on the side, a limp salad and a liquid sauce that tasted nothing like peanut satay sauce. My banana blossom fish was a huge chunk that was saturated in oil and hadn't been drained off. Inedible. And 3/4 of the plate was left. Mango curry was ok but lacked seasoning. Cauliflower popcorn was hardly popcorn size but pieces were the size of my hand and again had no flavour in the batter. Sweetcorn bbq ribs were boiled to death wet corn on the cob pieces with jarred BBQ sauce poured over the top. And we paid £70 for this. I felt robbed. And disappointed. I would have happily left and never gone back without writing this review but to discover after we paid that they had charged for the mojito we sent back after one sip - I feel the need to warn this restaurant serves sub par food and has no ethics when it comes to taking your money for food/drinks that are not what were ordered and therefore not consumed. The only disappointment of our 3 days in Eastbourne. Sad.
Just to add: Chloe the owner responded to this review on Tripadvisor. I can’t amend my review there or reply to her response but I can do that here. Chloe - no one called your waitress a ‘liar’ but my partner who ordered the mojito did say to her that it was not made properly and he was NOT offered another one. She asked what was wrong with it which he explained very clearly and you told him HE was wrong and there was nothing wrong with it. At which point he suggested cocktail lessons might help her understand why this was not a mojito. With regards to the food, I absolutely did question what on earth the chicken satay was - at no point did your waitress care that we were clearly disappointed and confused at how these items were served. My partner also spoke to you whilst I was in the toilet about why we were charged for the mojito and that we clearly didn’t enjoy the food as we left most of it on our plates and you did not care to adjust, or care for our feedback. You were rude and you simply didn’t care. Your server did ask if our meal was ok but rather than having to complain about every aspect of our experience at your restaurant we just said ‘it’s okay’ and wanted to leave. I haven’t berated you online. I’ve told the truth because you charged us for a drink that we sent back and that is totally wrong on every level and people should know that the management do not care what they serve and will happily take your money despite sending food back instead...
Read moreToday I visited The Good Grub with my wife and 2-year-old. We enjoyed The Green Bros. and were looking forward to seeing what changes there have been under the new owner. As it was the Eastbourne Airshow we booked in advance for lunch and I am pleased we did. People had to be turned away. According to the owner getting a table for lunch would not normally be a problem, more so if you're willing to eat outside, although I would still book just to be sure, especially if it is for dinner. The Good Grub has a lovely, relaxed interior with lots to look at without appearing cluttered. There is a good choice of drinks, including alcoholic. We opted for a couple of apple juices and a pineapple juice. The lunch menu is not vast but does have options to keep most people happy. The dinner menu is more extensive and you can always fill out your meal with the yummy sides. For our lunch my wife went for the steak toastie, I had the falafel wrap and my son had falafel and chips. We all enjoyed our meals with the seasoned fries and beetroot hummus being the highlights. Food and drink was brought to the table in good time and the owner made sure we were happy with everything throughout our time. Please note, the toilet is down some tight, twisting stairs, so certainly not wheelchair friendly. Customers are encouraged to leave empowering messages on the wall, which is a unique idea and I enjoyed reading the various quotes. The hand dryer wasn't working but paper towels were provided. When the bill came I was pleasantly surprised. Three tasty meals and drinks for less than £30 - bargain! Even before we had left my wife and I were already discussing a return visit for dinner. Read moreVisited twice during our stay in Eastbourne. I’m not vegan but my parents are so have eaten in countless vegan restaurants. The food was delicious and fresh, portions looked small but were filling. Would be nice for drinks too as decor is lively.
Do note that this is a politically vegan restaurant; my son has eating issues and after eating only chips and flatbread here the first night of the trip, I got a cheese sandwich for him to have with his houmous the second night. The chef was aggressive in saying he couldn’t eat it so I had to leave the restaurant with him. Would have appreciated if she’d explained rather than standing over me and shouting in my face as it was the first time in 8 years of regularly eating out with vegan family that it’s been a problem. We had spent over £300 on food and drink over the weekend so I wasn’t being disrespectful. It was a massive change of tone as front of house staff were really sweet when they made a mistake on the take out order the night before and I had to walk back to the restaurant to fix it.
Despite both of my meals being cold by the time I could eat them, the flavours were good. The restaurant is dog friendly with a mini menu for dogs. I wouldn’t recommend for people with mobility issues, seating is tight unless it’s warm enough to sit outside. The bathroom is down a tight,...
