One of 74 Martello Towers built along the south coast to defend against Napoleon in the early 1800's. The walls are 14 feet thick on the seaward side to defend against cannon balls and the round shape is to deflect cannon balls. On top would have been mounted at least one cannon on a swivel mount. It was never used in the napoleonic wars as napoleon didn’t invade in the end but if he had then this tower was part of the coastal defence.

This is an historic Marello Tower sited on top of the hill near the west end of Eastbourne 's Promenade. It is unusual in that it is sunk into a pit, presumably to add further protection against cannon fire from ships, although, perhaps this was done later. The tower is set in a nice garden layout and the views are exceptional on a clear day. If you visit here, do check out the old lifeboat museum at the bottom of the hill too.

Nice tower , great location, lots of parking spaces and toilets nearby, restaurant next door. Shame was closed, so we could just walk around .

I only visited to use the nearby toilets. There used to be a great restaurant here and also a sun lounge which was very popular. But for some reason it has been demolished and no restaurant has taken its place.

A great shame as there were wonderful views. Shame on Eastbourne Council for removing and not replacing this great asset...
