The Apple tree tea room was our go to place when we were in Minehead but after our experience on my last visit we will never go again. On all our previous visits the food and service has been excellent but on our last visit we were left very upset and disappointed by the whole experience and the service we received. Me my husband and two friends attended 2weeks ago we placed our order with the waitress .. who read back the order which was correct however when the order came 2 of the sandwiches ordered were not correct however we thought anyone can make a mistake and initially accepted what we were given. on reflection we realized one of the party could not eat the bread given her and we had also been given two portions of crisps that we hadn't ordered at an extra cost. I called a member of staff over and explained the situation and he then asked an older woman to sort the problem. She very sarcastically said she would remove anything that we didn't want and would replace the sandwiches with the granary bread we actually ordered but did say as the had run out of turkey that they would have to use the same filling which we readily accepted. when the sandwiches came back there was far less than we had returned the sandwiches were much smaller crusts had been removed and instead of the 4 quartered sandwiches there was only 2 on each plate. My husband pointed this out and her response was "I will bring you a knife and you can cut them in half !!!! I wish i had taken photos of the replacement sandwiches received . It was at this point I was very annoyed as the woman's attitude had been very sarcastic and condescending all through and felt as though she was talking down to me .....whatever happened to being courteous to your paying guests. I then asked to speak to the owner as I was not a happy customer only to be told she was in fact the owner at which point I asked where was the usual lovely young lady who was usually in charge was as I had never previously had any problems...... apparently that was her daughter; at which point I did comment that it was such a shame that she didn't take a leaf out her book and treat people with respect. I was very annoyed with the way we were treated and although i told her so i was still respectful to her and was not prepared to be spoken to in that manner. At this point we left and told her we would only be paying for the food and drinks we had actually consumed and that we would never under any circumstances return. We left and went to the Wheelhouse . and very extremely happy with our food and excellent...
Read moreI ended up here instead of my usual cafe because it closed early and next time I will walk straight past. I arrived and the front door was wide open, a customer inside asked if I would close it on my way in as someone before me had left it open. It was just me and my baby who needed to be fed, so I thought I’d have a cup of tea and feed her then be on my way. I found space for the pram and as I was getting her out so she stopped crying I was approached by an older lady and asked where I would be sitting. I explained I hadn’t really looked around yet (crying baby was my priority). When I got my LO out I spotted the cakes, they all looked delicious and I can confirm the Victoria sponge was! I sat down and as I sat down I was approached to order, so I put in my order and started feeding my baby. As she was feeding I picked up a menu and this was the first time I saw a ‘Cash Only’ sign. Having no cash on me I instantly felt regret and guilt. When the young lady returned with my tea and cake I had to confess that I had not seen the sign and that I did not have cash on me. From this point on I was made to feel like a criminal. The young lady explained where a cash point was and went off to tell the older lady. I could hear their conversation as the older lady tutted and said ‘I suppose we just have to trust her’. It then felt like I was watched like a hawk as I finished feeding my baby and drinking my tea. I felt so uncomfortable and just needed to get out of there. I didn’t finish my tea and packed up. I offered to leave something to show that I would be coming back to pay my tab. A customer suggested I left my 6 month old baby! 😱 I ran up the road to the first cash point that charged me £1.55 to use. I then went back and paid. This time when I entered I saw the sign on the front door, because I had to open the door. I can see other reviews about staff not telling customers when they take their order and they are still not doing this. I will never visit again unless I have to, but if you do go for the Victoria sponge, it...
Read moreAfter seeing that this cafe only accepted cash, I noted that I had £10 in cash. Myself and my daughter carefully calculated the total cost of the food we were going to order to ensure we would have enough to pay the bill. She ordered scrambled egg and I ordered a toasted teacake. After the server took our order, we were browsing through the menu and realised there was also a breakfast option for scrambled egg which included a hot drink. This being much more expensive. At this point, I approached a member of staff to confirm that we wanted a child's portion and that was accepted. Moments later, an older women came out to our table and told me that an adult portion had already been cooked. I responded that the more costly option was only served between 10 and 12 so I didn't know where the confusion was coming from (it being 1pm). This was met with "I'll have to adjust what else has been ordered to make up for it". Which made us feel like we had committed some kind of criminal act! After making us feel terrible for her server's mistake, she said she would let it go and maybe I could donate some money to a charity box! This service was absolutely disgusting and I wouldn't dream of visiting this antiquated establishment ever again. Also, I have been visiting Minehead for years and this cafe has never accepted debit cards, so the "at the moment we don't except card payments" is...
