Booked tickets for the flying scotsman for my father as a 70th birthday present 3 months in advance. The day before the trip was planned I received an email with details of the day and a message saying the railway would be looking forward to welcoming me on the trip.
After a two hour drive we are welcomed at the station to be told that the service was cancelled and that I should have received an email the night before letting me know. I received no such email and it was clear that mamy other people arriving at the station also had not been informed of the cancellation.
At the station I was simply told that the ticket would be refunded with no explination other than there were operational issues. No compensation for the 4 hour round trip, day booked off work or cost of travel.
Its completely fair and understandable that operational issues happen and that services are cancelled. My issue lies with the fact that there was no attempt to contact me to let me know, no attempt to rebook our ticket and no offer of compensation apart from an offer to buy a coffee from the site and to have a sit down before the two hour drive home.
Such a shame having been looking forward to a potentially once in a lifetime trip...
