The restaurant was very good - we ate here both nights. The food, the wine, the service all were good - some dishes we’re very good. The downstairs bar area was pleasant with areas to sit and food available if you didn’t want to go into the restaurant.||The hotel offered a limited but perfectly adequate breakfast. The room was comfortable and well equipped … but … the first room we were offered was right next to the kitchen extractor fans. It was noisy beyond belief - certainly not a room to relax in during the day. We asked for another room and about an hour later the manager indeed offered us a room on the front. There was traffic noise but nothing like the extractor fans. A word of caution: the hotel provides earplugs and in each room there is a notice to say that the windows are as they as are because it’s a listed building. We didn’t see any mention of this on the website. As it is so prominently displayed in the rooms then it really should be on the website - and I think that the room near the fans should also come with a warning (it may be OK for people who go to bed late and get up early). All in all it could have been 3-4 stars - probably 4 because the staff were so good.||However … and it is a huge ‘however’ … on the second night (2 30am) there was a fire alarm. We exited by the designated exit (opposite our bedroom) along a flat rooftop, only to find that the stairs down were dimly lit… the alarm stopped & we saw other guests returning and assumed all was OK. So we turned back from the staircase, asked another guest if it indeed was OK and we were told it was a false alarm (no night staff to be seen). ||Next morning we were pleased to hear the owner was around and we thought we could give feedback about our experience. She insisted on talking to us at the bar (we’d have preferred somewhere more private). She offered no explanation about the false alarm; she told us emphatically we used the wrong exit (despite it being the one clearly signposted in the room & opposite) and that she had no duty of care to check everyone was OK because there wasn’t a fire. She conceded she would check the lighting on the external stairs.||We had already paid for the room and only wanted to point things out but she was ultra defensive, aggressive rude and dismissive. We have stayed in many hotels but never ended up feeling so poorly treated...
Read moreLast minute overnight stay. Booked at 1pm, arrived around 7pm. Got a courtesy call from the manager to see if we wanted a table for evening meal - by this time we’d seen the menu and so this was a no brainer. Table booked and though we had a rough ETA, the manager said not to worry if we’d be late, we would have a table whatever time we arrived. Nice touch 👌||Easy to locate (didn’t know the area). Parking provided. Check in took all of 2 mins. We booked superior double room. Room spotless, very well decorated. Very light and airy. Bathroom huge, lovely decor and again, light and airy. Bed very comfy. Lovely little touches in the room like an info sheet with my name on, instead of the usual run of the mill left in rooms all the time. Little snacks in little jars. Great tea/ coffee selection with the kettle. ||We ate in the restaurant - my god I could hardly move after. We wanted local dishes so ended up having the same courses. Food was absolutely delicious. Great portions. Quirky as well, not the run of the mill pub restaurant choices. We had the mushroom and asparagus on toast with cheese sauce - could have eaten buckets of it. Main we opted for pork with veg and cider jus. Pork perfectly cooked, the pig in blanket enormous. Sticky toffee pudding with candied walnuts and clotted cream ice cream - heaven on a dish. We had wine with the meal - of which there was plenty of choice. |Breakfast was equally as delicious. ||The building is very old and that is evident from little cracks in the walls, the floors and windows but all these little imperfections make the venue burst with charm and history. The decor, is tastefully modern mixed with old. It’s far from sterile, instead it oozes charm, comfort and yet feels stylish. Clean throughout. |Staff absolutely lovely, friendly and informative. ||12/10 - would...
Read moreI don't often do reviews. Mainly because I don't feel anywhere is that good to warrant one.
But in this case, I want to share my opinion of this place, because this must be one of the best experiences had in a hotel. And I travel often, 2 or 3 times a month
The service has been top notch. £300+ per night, kind of hospitality But without the stuffiness or pretentiousness.
The staff have a laid back, easy going kind of vibe. But on it, when it comes to engaging with customers. They are top notch detail. Like being escorted to your room. Instead of being given directions Or having your dinner table reserved with your name on it. Instead of having to use a table number to order your food. They leave treats free of charge, on your room.
Honestly guys, this place is exceptional.
And the price per night is way affordable. The room is a really good size with great attention to detail. Like having big bottles of soap and hand cream. Instead of those miniature ones that run out halfway through a shower.
The bed is probably better than Premier Inn. And I've stayed at plenty of those hotels.
The food is seriously restaurant quality. While avoiding pub chain kind of meals.
All in all I'm chuffed that I chose this place. Even if it's a distance away from where I'm working. And will come here again, if I'm back around the area to work
