Went for a meal for a friend's birthday last night and they phoned to ask us if we could come in half an hour earlier because they could then fit two more groups in. We didn't realise this meant that they'd be rushing us with our orders and trying to get us out as quick as possible. The chicken tikka chaat starter was dry, had no sauce whatsoever in it which I've never seen with this dish when I've had it previously, and had a huge chunk of tomato randomly in the middle of the wrap (obviously to pad out the small amount of meat inside the pancake/puri. My main was one of the lamb specials. It was pretty flavourless and might as well have just been a tin of chopped tomatoes with some coriander in it. The lamb didn't taste like lamb at all and was as tough as a well done steak. I could barely cut through it and it was very chewy. No sweetness like lamb should have making me think it wasn't actually lamb anyway. The dish was bulked out by more tomatoes than meat, and a couple of huge potatoes that were raw in the middle. I also got keema rice, in which the onions were undercooked and hard, and I wasn't able to distinguish any minced beef at all in the rice. This was also bland and didn't taste of anything. We were never asked if any of us wanted any more drinks despite more than half of the table having empty glasses before the mains even arrived, and the waiters came and started taking our plates away before we'd finished eating, and certainly didn't ask if it was ok to start clearing the plates. One of the group had gone to the toilet only to return to find they'd taken his plate and he hadn't finished eating yet. I'm a bit of a slow eater so by the time they had finished taking everyone's plates I felt rushed to give them my plate. They then didn't ask if anyone wanted to see the dessert menu either. All in all it was by far the worst Indian meal I've had in Ulverston, and that's saying something considering they have Naaz/Blue Elephant to contend with for that prize. Back to Aroma it is then. I've never had a bad meal there and while it might be a bit dated and old fashioned inside, the food is so much better in...
Read moreThe BEST Indian cuisine around! The Bengal Rose is a favourite place of ours to dine in and take away. Great for family celebrations and get together with friends and colleagues. When family visit and stay with us, they always request we fit in a Bengal Rose meal! Gift vouchers are available which have been very gladly received by friends and family. Owner and Staff are very professional, providing an excellent, friendly service and can give you great suggestions of dishes to try according to your tastes. Don't fear Indian cuisine thinking that it'll be too hot or spicy, with plenty of things on the menu, there's something for EVERYONE! The flavours of the dishes from Bengal Rose are divine! We have our firm favourites (Tandoori Butter Chicken, Lamb Tikka Masala, Saag Paneer etc) but we're always trying new dishes and are never disappointed. A new favourite to our list is Bindi Bhaji. Food is freshly prepared and stays hot enough for the journey home when picking up a takeaway. Highly recommended by lots of locals. We'll definitely be returning soon, but we might leave it a little longer than 2 days...
Read moreWonderful experience! We'd booked a table on the evening of the Lantern Festival, so it was a busy night for sure and all of the staff were working extremely hard and were very accommodating.
We were seated at a nice table, and given time to think about what we would like to order whilst we grazed on poppadoms, dips/chutneys and enjoyed our drinks. We didn't feel rushed for a second by anyone, despite how busy the place was.
The food was absolutely incredible, I couldn't fault a thing about it. It was brought out in a very timely manner, well presented and tasted amazing. Everything was flawless, top tier.
Special praise goes to the manager that evening. A welcoming and friendly face, very accommodating, polite and understanding. Apologetic for any delays due to how busy it was and we were all well looked after. Despite the rush and how hard he, and everyone, was working, he was very personable and made the experience as a whole that much more 👏🏻
We love coming to Ulverston each year for the festival, and will add the Bengal Rose to our annual visits. Looking forward to...
