I went to the Black Horse last night having booked a table for 9 to celebrate my dear mothers 80th birthday and was bitterly dissapointed when half way through the evening we realised it was the pubs quiz night. The place very quickly filled up and it became obvious that we would not be able to celebrate this very important night in my mothers life in the way we had intended. When I approached the landlord and asked him why when I rang to book our table he hadn’t thought to tell me about the quiz night he was very dismissive and said “well people do book tables for meals on a quiz night”, “but surely not to celebrate their Mothers 80th birthdays” was my reply. We had put up balloons and a banner and had brought a birthday cake for the event all of which had to be taken home unused because we could not have sung happy birthday to Mum in the middle of the quiz. This evening was a one off event in my dear mothers life and one that I had hoped would be perfect for her which is just what she deserved but it was totally ruined in my opinion by the actions of a very irresponsible landlord who is not running this pub in the interests of all of its paying customers. We live in Rottingdean and have seen this pub change landlords before but in my opinion the current landlords are the worse we have experienced in terms of customer service, after this incident we will not use this pub again and would not recommend it to anyone else, there are much better run pubs in...
Read moreUsing my husbands account as I was very disappointed and wanted to review. Extremley shocked the way we were treated. Upon on arrival we were aggressivley told we should of told them one of our friends was unwell and unable to make it. Was really looking forward to a night out after lockdown and seeing friends again. A glass was smashed over me and table accidently by a new waitress which was fine, accidents happern and this was delt with quickly. 2 dishes we ordered was wrong and one was replaced, the other we were told " can you just eat it as I'm in so much trouble with the manager already". It was a prawn dish and no one on the table liked prawns! When the manager came over we got hostile, sarcastic remarks and felt uncomfortable. When leaving we had booked to stay till the end but an hour before we were told to leave when others were still drinking. My friend had a full glass of wine taken off her when paying. Again when we left he made a nasty sarcastic comment to one of us which deeply upset her. Cannot believe how that manager can get away with treating his customers like that. Such a shame as been before and the service was very good. The problem is definitely the manager!! Will never go back again and good luck to anyone who goes there when...
Read moreWent with high expectations as we had heard it was the place to go for a Sunday lunch and thought we would try on the off chance we could walk in. We walked in and it was empty, which should have perhaps acted as a warning.
There appeared to be more staff than customers 4 and a manager, who was welcoming when we arrived but it was unfortunately down hill from there. We were pretty much alone there but no one really showed any interest in us.
The food didn’t come all out at once. No one checked in with us if everything was ok or if we wanted further drinks or desserts or teas or coffees offered. All the while staff were either stood about or drinking behind the bar?!
The roast was really poor. Grey beef. Thaw and serve Yorkshire pudding. Meh.
Asked about Christmas day and was told that there was availability and the manager would get us information. Which never did arrive.
We had to go and ask for the bill In the end and were told they’d bring card machine which never arrived either, so went back to the bar to pay.
I genuinely want to support local business and have a great and positive experience. You understand if a place is busy that service may suffer but this place was well staffed and virtually empty so there is no excuse for the bad...
