The Blue Peter Inn in Polperro is an absolute must-visit for anyone in the area. Perched near the harbour, the entrance is up a steep set of steps that lead you into a true gem of a pub. For those who enjoy soaking up the sun with a pint in hand, the benches outside offer a perfect spot. For the more adventurous, there's a small beer garden at the very top of the pub, accessible via a bit of a climb as it joins a cliff walk footpath—definitely worth the effort for the view!
Stepping inside, you’re greeted by a cozy interior with low ceilings, exactly how you’d imagine an 18th-century pub. The atmosphere is always warm and inviting, with the place buzzing with conversation and laughter. The walls are adorned with fascinating artifacts, and you could easily spend hours exploring the history and stories they tell—all while enjoying a pint or two.
The staff at the Blue Peter Inn are outstanding—friendly, knowledgeable, and they know exactly how to run a proper pub. The menu is excellent, offering all the classic pub favorites along with some fantastic vegan options. The Tofish and Chips, Tofu Burger, and Jackfruit Caribbean Curry are all delicious and worth trying.
One thing to note is that they don’t take bookings, so it’s a good idea to arrive early to get your name on the list. The pub gets very busy, and tables fill up quickly.
In summary, the Blue Peter Inn is everything you could want in a traditional pub—charming, historical, and full of character. It’s a place you’ll want to return to...
Read moreWe never actually got to eat at the ‘Queue Peter Inn’ so I cannot tell you what the food is like, although I did stand next to diners eating their fish and chips out of a brown boxes on picnic benches crammed together like sardines whilst I and many others were expected to queue past their wooden tables.
Hilariously they have erected clear Perspex screens that stand about 24 inches high in the middle of the picnic benches dividing them in half width ways .....this is to allow Queue Peter to cram on 2 families on at a time 🤣
Their website states ‘1st come 1st served’ you can’t reserve a table, but what they actually do is cram as many people in and on as possible - 1 metre apart, don’t make me laugh - and then they expect anyone who would like to eat there to queue !
We heard one person who queued being told the wait would be 1 1/2 hours and that this would probably AFTER they stopped serving food !
My advice - use the fabulous Chippy that is also on the harbour at Polperro if you want fish and chips, they come in old fashioned paper, not brown boxes, they are excellent quality, an excellent price and the staff are knowledgeable about allergens too ! Plus we ate ours on a bench overlooking the coastal path and harbour rather than being crammed onto very un-Covid secure tables with loads of...
Read moreHaving lived in Polperro until my late teens and spent many hours in 'The Blue', I was apprehensive about going back after over 30 years! I needn't have worried! The pub is still familiar from those days, and it still has the same warm, unique and entertaining welcome, cosy nook feel, highlighted with bright light from sunshine pouring through its little windows. It definitely doesnt feel stuck in the past though (I think The Blue was simply always ahead of its time!). I had a very reasonably priced small fish and chips (perfect size btw) and my friend indulged in the seafood platter. Both were served much more quickly than we anticipated, exactly what we ordered and superb quality! Home made and delicious....I wish I could make chips like that! Really good background music and people coming in and out (as they always did), made for a fantastic atmosphere...it was great to see you so busy, but it wasn't too much for your brilliant team, who did an awesome job of looking after everyone. Thank you so much and I hope you continue to be well supported as you really...
