Calypso Restaurant — Restaurant in England

Was really excited to try this restaurant. We arrived as a party of 11 for Birthday celebrations.

The two cocktails I tried where a strawberry daiquiri which was mostly blended ice which wouldnt melt down so abit wasted and a strawberry mojito which was really nice. I order curried mutton, the Mutton cooked beautifully the sauce not so nice, i think it was watered down too much and lost too much of the flavour. The rice and peas wasn't nice couldn't taste any coconut, or other spices. The rice was cooked nice but wouldn't of recommended that type of rice. Probably would of been nicer with kidney beans instead of pigeon peas (if that's what you used). The patty's where smaller than we thought but you did get 2 and was very nice and flavoursome. My partner got the jerk chicken wings for starters which he thoroughly enjoyed. The dumplings were absolutely beautiful. The young man who greated us on arrival was very friendly and helpful. I visited Calypso in Burnley expecting authentic Caribbean food, but what I got was far from it. The food was absolutely disgusting and clearly microwaved. The curried mutton was half cold, then you’d take another bite, and it was red hot—completely inconsistent. The patties were definitely not homemade and were freezing cold in the middle.

The rice and peas tasted like they came straight out of a packet, with no flavour at all. The fried plantain was swimming in oil, making it inedible. To top it off, the jerk chicken wasn’t even jerk! It lacked any of the smoky, spicy flavours you’d expect.

I’m not sure how this place is rated the best in Burnley. If this is what people here think is Jamaican or Caribbean food, they’re being completely robbed. This was not authentic in any way, shape, or form.

On top of the terrible food, there was a cat roaming around the dining area, jumping on tables while people were eating. That’s completely unhygienic and unacceptable for a restaurant.

Save your money and avoid this place...

TurtleBay let us down, Health & Safety no water in area therefore had no option but close! So I'd marked this restaurant to want to go, used Google maps to walk from town centre up the hill, taken us 12mins. It was so worth the wait, a lovely restaurant, very inviting inside, music playing, lovely friendly staff, the young man who who served us was a superb, thank you, I didn't ask your name. Started off with cocktails, offer on 2 for £10, & you don't have to choose the same, they can both be different 😉 Lush!, Food was amazing, cooked to perfection, service was good too, started getting a little busy, but came over to inform us our order was on it's way, great communication 😀. I went to investigate outside, lot's of seating outside overlooking the river, beautiful scenery & in the sunshine 🌞, next visit 😀 👍. Definitely recommend trying this place & also child friendly, burgers, small starters, or get a couple of sides, main meals, lot's of beers/Gin/juice etc, & it's not too...
