Christmas Dinner 2022 We came today as a huge treat to bring my elderly Mum for a memorable dinner. We have had quite a difficult year with family health issues. The meals were £54.99! Not the most expensive locally but definitely not the cheapest. So it was something that had been saved for. We arrived and sat at our table, the first diners in one large area. It took some time before a staff member came to tell us we had to order drinks at the bar or via the Greene King app. Starters arrived, all ok. The soup with a slice of white bread, the duck quackers. We had all ordered traditional Christmas dinners. It was a large plate of food but definitely quantity over quality. The roast potatoes were definately from a ready prepared bag, the type Aunt Bessie provides, all uniform and the same powdery taste, sadly not beautifully basted and golden with oddly cut shapes as you'd expect? The turkey was suspiciously all uniform size, a smooth texture, colour and exactly the same shaped slices with an odd fat along the edge? Not a freshly carved bird at all it seemed? Roast parsnips were hard and very difficult to cut through. 2 pale 'pigs' and just one had a very tiny 'blanket'. The rest of the veg was nice. Yorkshire puds were also oddly uniform and sized? Puddings ok, gingerbread cheesecake incredibly sweet but nice and a big portion. They had no normal cream for Mums Xmas pudding but she had ice cream. Finally coffee and mince pie. Coffee poured from a pot was instant which surprised me. I had expected filter, maybe expectations too high? Mince pies were bought, not handmade sadly. Again, were my expectations too high? There was only 1 person on the bar the whole time so ordering drinks from the app didn't arrive after 15 mins and the bar was incredibly busy with a long queue when we went to go and collect them instead. It was servicing those just drinking at yhe pub as well as diners. I'm not sure what I was expecting but I was expecting great quality and a bit of wow for £55. It is a Greene King after all and we have visited the Swan at Bletchley before which has amazing food and service. It was OK, we made no fuss as we wanted my Mum to enjoy her day. My husband tipped £20 as not the waiting staffs fault.
Maybe there was a reason like reduced staff, something going wrong with ordering in the food? Not sure but a fair review of the meal I would say.
If there was a problem today to cause these issues, I would hope they would be honest and alert us as we sat down or prior to coming via email, maybe offer a price reduction or at least an apology.
Just a bit disappointed and a little confused by what was served for £275 plus drinks bill.
REPLY: Thank you for your reply Ray. Apologies as I had cut and pasted the named pub and meant the Bletchley Swan, though we have also visited the Woughton Chef & Brewer pub too in the past. Aside from the different pricing and service at different pub chains, I do think that the Hungry Horse meal offered at £54.99 was not great quality for that cost. We had looked at all the meals offered locally from MK buffet at £27.99, right up to village pubs at £84.99. The reason we came was because Houghton Regis is local, we knew the Greene King brand was good and your reviews also seemed good. Partly why I was surprised by our experience as the food has good reviews. We may well come back and try again...
Read moreI don’t do many reviews on this site or on the others. However on this occasion I think it warrants mentioning. We went to one of our locals on Friday for a little bit of evening dinner with a couple of friends, the young lad who served food was very polite and also very apologetic on the long wait for it. However I cannot say this about the members of staff behind the bar, there was also a young lad who seemed to be rushed off his feet and just said I am extremely sorry I’ll get to you quick as I can but it’s just me on at the moment. One side of the bar was completely covered in dirty glasses, plates of food and general bar rubbish, the other side had numerous glasses and it was only nearly 8:30. We was going to come and sit in from the restaurant in the sports bar area, however this was also covered in peoples dirty glasses & plates etc so we decided to remain in the restaurant for a little while longer. My wife went to the bar with a number of other people to get get drinks but she waited some 20/25 minutes, she didn’t go to make a complaint just to ask politely if they could clear a table in the sports bar for us all to sit at, she got an extremely rude and quite abrupt response by a different gentleman at this point. I then went up to the bar as I found this unacceptable and asked if it was possible to speak to the manager, he cut me off in mid sentence and stated he was the duty manager and without a further word walked off down a corridor. We decided to stand at the bar and finish our drinks, I was expecting him to come back and apologise, however we didn’t see the gentleman anymore for a couple of hours of which time we got ready to leave, just before we left I did ask the young lad who had served us at the beginning where this particular gentleman was and he said as far as I’m aware he’s in the office.
I’m extremely shocked on how rude someone in authority could be. This is not what you...
Read moreA long while ago my family and I visited The Chequers and did not have a very good experience and i said i would never go back, however we heard there had been a big turn around so a few weeks back we decided that we would go and give it another chance our friends wanted to eat locally in Houghton Regis and suggested The Chequers. Myself and the rest of the family reluctantly agreed to meet them there. Our experience could not have been any different from our first one! The food was delicious, the portion sizes were big, the service was outstanding and we genuinely had a great evening. Our waiter could not have been more pleasant and helpful, food prices are very reasonable and we also got 20% off are whole bill for ordering via the app. Its very rare i will write a review after only one visit because anyone can get it right once, so i like to go atleast twice before i will review, so after the good experience we had, when my son asked last week if we could go back to the Chequers for tea i agreed, The third time exceeded the second and the service really was second to none. We are really happy we have found somewhere to eat that ticks every box and with it being around the corner it is ideal. I don’t normally leave reviews but I felt like I had to share this one, my self and husband run 6 local kids football teams and have now recommend this place endless amount of times also i want to say a speacial thanks to the owner/ manager this guy is amazing super friendly and made us feel so welcome on each...
