Since going to Japan, I have never ordered sushi back in England because why would I want to pay for mediocre quality that will never match Japan? However I learned of Ebi Sushi being one of the best sushi restaurants in the UK and decided it was long past due that I have some proper, high quality sushi. I went for a meal tonight and had a lovely time. The chef prepares each item freshly with love and expertise. The fish is very high quality, amount of wasabi in each item is perfect and the rice is perfectly formed, not too tightly packed or lacking moisture. People say it is expensive; it is a little bit but again, why pay for mediocre sushi with inferior ingredients? For the price you’re paying, you aren’t getting skimpy, Tesco meal deal sized rolls and nigiri, it’s generous slices of high quality fish spilling over the rice, and the tamago (egg) sushi uses omelette the length of my hand, easily twice the size of the rice and delicious! I ordered the deluxe sushi platter which I think is pretty decent value, soft shell crab roll (which was incredible) and tamago nigiri and left very full. I could’ve probably done without the crab or tamago sushi and still been satisfied. Every other person in the restaurant was Japanese, mostly from the nearby Toyota factory which to me, is a great sign of quality. It’s a lovely meal at mid-range prices, you’re not gonna eat there every night but I would happily dine there again periodically as it is right on my doorstep and I’m so grateful to have such a high quality sushi restaurant in central England. Anyone saying the decor is outdated has clearly never been to Japan or a real sushi restaurant, the restaurant looks like it has been taken right out of a little alley in Asakusa (Tokyo) and in perfect keeping with traditional sushi restaurant decor, both...
Read moreAbsolutely awful. I was prepared to shell out £150 for a meal for two having looked at their menu on the restaurant window previously. The three kind sashimi at £19 for 9 slices of fish was not worth it. The taste is average and freshness would be a 5/10. The presentation was nothing to talk about.
Vegetable tempura for £8 - carrot slice, half a mushroom, half an onion, a slice of courgette, single slice of aubergine. All fried in what tasted liked highly reused oil. If this is not robbery I don't know what is. A score of 1/10.
Saba Shio for £7.5 - fillet of mackerel grilled with a mountain of salt. Again nothing great or spectacular unless you love salt. Since it was cooked right I'd give it a 6/10.
Gyoza for £5.50- 5 pork and cabbage dumplings. The only item that seemed authentic and offered value for money. 9/10.
I stopped. Went elsewhere to finish up dinner. The price is exorbitant for what you get in terms of quantity and quality. The taste isn't something that would linger in your tongue or mind. Lived two years in Tokyo. This restaurant is an insult to how high I value the Japanese in their commitment to serving good food.
Just because it is the only Japanese restaurant in Derby run by Japanese folk doesn't make it a hidden gem. I wish this restaurant was hidden...
Read moreThe best sushi I've had in the UK. A small authentic Japanese sushi restaurant that caters to the many Toyota employees that want a taste of home. Get it whilst you can!
Tip: fish day is Tuesday so to get the freshest sushi go early in the week!
They don't normally do takeaway, it's normally a sit down restaurant, so if they're busy they might just refuse your takeaway order. Or just try again later in the evening.
Typically you will need to book for Friday and Saturday night since it's small, but just in case, I would advise you book on any night you decide to go.
They also have a specials menu - have to ask since it depends on whatever the chef decided to prepare or buy and it's written up on the board on the wall but written in Japanese.
Lastly if you're going to be ordering a decent amount such as £200-400+ for your party maybe try to get there earlier before other people do… it's only a few restaurant so whenever you go and do that, other guests come in but wait extra long because they are still trying to clear that order so everyone else gets pushed back. (Sorry!…)
Friendly staff and chef. You can see the sushi getting prepared. Worth...
