I had heard good things about gilbeys so decided to give it a go. Met two friends there for tea/coffee and cakes. Its a nice restaurant and was busy but we still felt able to talk to each other without it being too noisy
We had looked at the menu before going and fancied the scone with clotted cream and jam
When the waitress came i ordered a pot of tea which at 2.70 was fine. I said i would like a scone but she said they didnt do them anymore. I said, nicely, that they really need to take them off the website but two week later they are still on it. I then asked what pastries and cakes they had - again it says on the website to ask - they had carrot cake, a salted caramel pot and cheesecake. I asked what the cheesecake was and she said she didnt know but thought it was salted caramel. Well go and check what it is then!!
Anyway we ordered the cheesecake which may have been salted caramel or biscoff but whatever it was it was nice. Presentation wise it just came with a small rosette of cream which i suspect was squirty cream. That was fine for a piece of cheesecake just as an afternoon treat. Well until i paid for it. I went up to pay and my bill was £9.65. So 6.95 for a piece of cheesecake with no decoration. Ive had cheesecake before that had come with fresh berries and maybe a chocolate curl but for £6.95 i expected a bit more with it
The toilets arent very nice. A half painted hand rail that was sticky. I thought they might be upgrading so i just accepted that
Im sorry to have to say that i was disappointed. They have nice sounding meals which looked good but werent cheap. I feel they are charging evening prices for lunch/afternoon meals and cakes
The cakes were in plastic containers with a label on which, forgive me if im wrong, made me think they arent home made
Im sure i will get a sarcastic answer back from the owner because ive seen some of the replies. The one to the lady on her own is sarcastic and unkind. Yes she didnt eat at your restaurant/cafe but her experience warranted a review. An experience isnt just about the food.
My overall feeling of the restaurant was that money was a main factor before anything else. I might go back for a meal but at around £16 for a, very nice looking and presented, burger it would have to be a special occasion
As an owner you need to see the reviews as constructive criticism. I feel ive been fair in my review. I haven't given you any 1 stars even though my experience or cost was...
Read moreLast night, I had the pleasure of dining at Gilbrys and it was an experience worth sharing. From the moment I walked in, the ambiance transported me to the coasts of Cyprus—warm lighting, rustic decor, and the soft hum of traditional music created a welcoming atmosphere..
The menu offered a thoughtful mix of classics and modern takes on Mediterranean dishes. I started with the mezze platter which was a standout—plentiful, hot, and bursting with flavour. For main I had The chicken gyros that were to die for the chicken was juicy, well-seasoned and absolutely delicious. My partner had the seafood platter which was vibrant, generous in portion, and brimming with fresh tempura prawns, squid and other bits, he added the calamari which he said was amazing.
The service was attentive without being overbearing, and the staff was also very knowledgeable about the ingredients and wine pairings.
Overall, Gilbeys delivers authenticity, flavor, and comfort in every bite. It’s a must-visit for anyone craving a...
Read moreA delightful family run bistro. We had the seafood platter with chips and mussels as an extra. A nice mix of hot and cold fresh seafood. The mussels were spot on, not too garlicy or creamy with nice bread on the side. I could go on and on about each beautiful item on the platter. All washed down by an excellent bottle of Spanish rose. The coffees were rather large and very nice as was the cheesecake. A very enjoyable hour and three quarters, our choice, as we slowly let the very enjoyable afternoon pass. The owners were very attentive and allowed us to dictate when and if we wanted anything else. Looking forward to returning very soon in the...
