As Indians who have tried, tasted, and tested foods of various Indian regions and therefore cuisines, we can claim some street cred about (on our own yardstick) what is good Indian food.
As I write this, I acknowledge a slight sense of haughtiness almost like "Anton Ego" (from Pixar's Ratatouille), and have churned through our share of hundreds (if not thousands) of restaurants in our lifetime so far. But very few make you get transported into that warm fuzzy feeling in your heart (kind of like what that ratatouille did to Anton).
Folks, Richie's is a hidden gem, and of all the places one would least expect such a place to be in Torquay. But, by heavens we thank our stars, we are so glad that we found it.
Not only was Riche on dinner plans the third night in succession, but this hat-trick was also broken (sort of) only because Richie's majestic chefs need rest too, and we're closed on the second night we were in Torquay.
Food-wise we tried their Sambar and Tamil Veg Curry, both were stupendously put together with a feast of vegetables that just made the whole thing give you that 'comfort' food feel that you often reminisce from olden days at home. The only minute thing that felt out of order was that the chapatis appeared to be the pre-packaged kind. But other than that, this is the food we would be benchmarking other Indian restaurants for a long time to come.
To further establish how special this was, a testament from my 7yo son sums it up brilliantly. Disclaimer: He is sick of the frequency with which he is exposed to Indian food both at home and at restaurants. However, on this occasion, after the first few bites he declared "This is how Indian food should be", speaks volumes about how good this food was.
Team Richie's ....Take a bow!
Thank you for being a big part of our memory of our visit to Torquay!
At the risk of plagiarising Anton Ego again It is difficult to imagine more humble origins than those of the genius now cooking at Richie's, who is, in this critic's opinion, nothing less than the finest chef in Torquay. I will be returning to Richie's soon,...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreDear readers,
I recently had the pleasure of dining at an Indian restaurant that I cannot recommend highly enough. From the moment we stepped through the door, my wife, daughter, and I were blown away by the exceptional customer service provided by the staff.
The restaurant is beautifully decorated and has a warm, inviting atmosphere. We were seated promptly and our waiter, whose name I believe was Raj, was incredibly friendly and attentive throughout our meal. He went out of his way to ensure that our dining experience was nothing short of exceptional.
The food was simply outstanding. We ordered a variety of dishes, from spicy curries to mild biryanis, and each one was cooked to perfection. The spices and flavors were balanced perfectly, making for a truly memorable meal.
But what really stood out to us was the kindness and hospitality of the staff. Our daughter has a severe nut allergy, and the restaurant went above and beyond to ensure that her meal was safe and enjoyable. They took the time to double-check all the ingredients in her food, and even made a special dish just for her to ensure that there was no risk of cross-contamination.
Overall, our dining experience at this Indian restaurant was absolutely wonderful. The food was delicious, the atmosphere was inviting, and the customer service was truly exceptional. I cannot recommend this restaurant highly enough, and I will definitely be returning on my next visit to the area.
Thank you to the entire staff for making our evening so special. You truly went above and beyond to make us feel welcome and taken care...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreRang and booked a table for Saturday. Been advised over the phone they're fully booked, but if I can come within 15 minutes they can serve me. I took that opportunity thinking they must be good and have many excellent reviews.
Ordered a lamb dosa, chicken curry, vegetable rice and mango lassi. Been advised from the waiter everything is cooked fresh and may take some time for food to arrive. There was a large table with 6 adults and 2 children and my table, therefore only 2 tables being served. Restaurant was empty however reservations dotted around on all tables. A few walk in customers were being turned down. Table in front of me waited for almost an hour for food. For my 3 items I had to wait 45 minutes! I was just about to leave until the waiter assured me the food will arrive within 1 minute. My food arrived as assured by the waiter.
Lamb dosa only had 4 pieces of small meat, the chicken curry was bland and had no taste. Vegetable rice was also bland. Mango lassi was watery. Reason I'm giving a 2 star and not 1 star is for the young waiter who was attentive, however the food was very poor.
