Where do I start....I was blown away by the four course vegan plant based menu priced at £12 the catering students at Blackburn College, created, cooked and served at Scholars. I and my husband went for lunch and the whole experience far exceeded our expectations, the food was amazing, beautifully presented, cooked, seasoned and was an absolute delight to eat. This is accomplished, confident cooking and yet the chefs are only aged 16 to 19 and their talents put to shame many of the places I have dined, where the vegan food has been a token gesture, an after thought of just putting any old rubbish on the plate. Scholars vegan food was well thought out, creative, exciting and cooked with passion. These are our chefs of the future, how lucky are we. I had a chat with student chefs Imogen and Gem (who made our mushroom dish & dessert respectively) who were so enthusiastic about their cooking. The front of house team were equally as good, serving the dishes and making sure we had drinks etc and checking if we liked the food. Credit is due to their mentor Head Chef Dave and Restaurant Manager Karen for introducing a vegan plant based menu. I cannot...
Read moreBooked the set menu at this training restaurant. Went with an open mind not sure what to expect. Surprised and delighted was a bit of an understatement. I had the the pork belly for starters. It was cured and roasted with a subtle glaze. Served with a parsnip puree, apple gel a pork scratching. Cooked to perfection and presented well. For mains, i had the peri peri chicken served with a celeriac remoulade and butternut squash ans basmati rice. The subtle coriander in the remoulade evened out the heat of the peri spices in a complentary flavoured sauce. Rice cooked just right. For dessert i had the chocolate mousse served with a sheep's milk sorbet and salted caramel sauce. It came with a wafered top and spun sugar basket. Very well presented. Mousse was light and yet rich with chocolate. The sorbet cold and creamy and sublime salted caramel sauce. Cannot speak too highly of this restaurant. Felt like i was in a high class establishment. Would definately recommend this to all. I...
