As a regular commuter, I am at the station early in the morning frequently throughout the week. On a number of occasions over the past 6 months, I’ve found the service here to be slow and lack any sense of urgency however today’s experience prompted me to write a review.
I think the key is that if this wasn’t situated in a train station (specifically a place where people are in time-sensitive situations waiting for trains) I wouldn’t have too much of a complaint. I had 8 minutes before my train was due to leave and was right next to the coffee shop with no queue so assumed that would be plenty time to order, pay and collect my coffee before catching my train. There were 4 people behind the counter, one cleaning the coffee machine after serving the last customer and the other 3 (struggling to find another word here) faffing over croissants. After 3 mins of waiting (reiterating that no one else is in the queue or anyone waiting for orders to be given) I was unsure why no-one had even looked me in the eye. After another minute, time ticking before my train leaves, I said excuse me, at which point the server half looked up from the counter and said ‘yeah, I’ll be with you in 2 mins’, putting their index finger up. At this point, I didn’t have time to wait for another 2 mins before even ordering my drink let alone it being made and based on the pace I’d seen, I was not hopeful, so I left. Rightly or wrongly, I would assume that serving a customer would take priority over making things look nice (if there are 3 people doing this!). Anywhere else, this might be an average coffee shop, where the coffee is dispensed after the barista pressing a button on the digital board of the coffee maker - very much worth the £3-4 price of a coffee, but still fine coffee when I have had one - the quality is much better in the downstairs coffee shop when it’s open. When it initially opened in replacement of Starbucks, I was happy as Starbucks is also over priced and unauthentic but it’s not much better here unfortunately. However, with its placement in the station, the staff really need more of a sense of urgency, maybe reading customers’ needs if it sounds like they’re in a rush and letting them know how...

Read moreA small, basic, nondescript place serving hot drinks and some wraps and sandwiches at distinctly London prices: I paid £3.70 for a regular Americano with milk in a paper cup! The very same thing, in The Grand Cafe (a beautifully restored building in the centre of town), served with a ceramic cup and saucer, costs- wait for it- £2.80!! At first, I thought the sign on the display cabinet read, ‘We are clueless’, but on closer inspection I saw that it read, ‘We are cashless’. Perhaps the former would have been more apt in terms of their pricing regime. The workers were very nice: welcoming, helpful and efficient. The self-service area was clean and well maintained. The WiFi was good. I was surprised at how basic my seating was (directly facing the counter), given the wallet-shatteringly high prices: just a wooden box-like bench structure without cushions (see photo). TOP TIP: stock up with coffee & snacks before catching a train here and save enough money, over a relatively short period of time, to buy yourself a...
