Steels was a favourite place to eat for a friend now sadly deceased. Getting to it by car is a bit of a pain as the initial route to the restaurant is now' no entry's one way roads, however if you persevere you will be rewarded.
There is a paid car park opposite one side and on road parking for a maximum of 2 hours opposite the other side.
The front door is narrow and bit suitable for wheelchair access. On entry you find yourself in an old fashioned restaurant on two floors. The only public toilets were on the first floor, up a winding staircase. Steels is not wheelchair friendly.
The place is busy. Really busy. We were a party of 3 and had to wait ten minutes whilst staff served food, shifted people to make space, and cleared tables. We eventually got a corner table.
We were there for the fish and chips. Haddock was on the menu. No cod. Also, it seems in Cleethorpes, gherkins and pickled onions are not on the menu.
We all went for the haddock and chips. A couple of us had the mushy peas. I had a boat if curry sauce. I also had a sausage. The other two had coffee, whilst I had tea.
The haddock was coated in a thin and crunchy layer of golden batter. It was fresh and tasty. The chips were golden in colour too and were also spot on. Two of us went for the jumbo size and that left no room for desserts, so a good portion size.
The mushy peas were not watery, like some I have seen, but dry and substantial
The curry sauce didn't have any bite, but was more like a gravy. My wife didn't order curry sauce, instead she supper her chips into my boat of sauce. Bloody woman! ;-) The sausage, although home made, was tiny and not worth the £1.25 charged. Don't bother.
The coffee drinkers had a single cup of coffee, whilst tea was delivered on a tray with a teapot, hot water pot, milk and sugar.
Service was busy, but friendly.
Cost came to just under £60.
I recommend Steels. Just don't...
Read moreVisited here today for some fresh fish and chips, ordered the jumbo haddock and chips with mushy peas, tea, bread and butter. Had to wait about 10 minutes to be seated but was greeted by lovely staff very polite and helpful, I personally like the decor it's a little date but adds character, felt homely. From the time of ordering to arrival at my table it must have been about 15 minutes which is fine, when it came the portion was quite large but I wouldn't say jumbo as I have had bigger from other restaurants. The fish was a little bit bland and lacked flavour, the child where nice but not amazing and the mushy peas where mediocre. To be honest nothing had the full on flavour that I crave, it was all nice but not tasty if that makes sense. The bread and butter was a mix of brown and white bread which was fine, the teapot was very large and did two of us several times. The kids meal we ordered pizza and chips but unfortunately they brang out a Chicago town mini microwave pizza (I know this because I personally buy them from asda), however they did give my son a free ice cream after so it kind of made up for it. Overall it's a lovely little place but the food was lacking any definitive flavour and left me unsatisfied unfortunately. It's not cheap either at £8 to £10 per person for cheapest fish and chips... although that does include the tea and bread and butter. Nice but next time will probably...
Read moreI visited this wonderful venue on the 22nd Of January 2024 and would absolutely love to come back here on a future visit to Cleethorpes, an absolute gem.
This was the 2nd venue I visited during my Day trip to Cleethorpes and I have to say this was by far the better restaurant out of the 2 I visited. Initially they were not open at first during the day due to Electricity issues however upon returning later they were back open and it was most definitely worth the wait.
The staff were nice and friendly, if you are after Fish & Chips they only sell Haddock, this I did not mind personally as I would usually go for Haddock as a backup if my preferred choice Cod was not available.
I decided to have the Small Haddock & Chips which for the price of £10.95 I thought was a fantastic price considering what I got for it, it came with a pot of tea and some bread and butter, you do not get all of this at many places for such good value, the portion was a lot bigger than I expected and I absolutely loved it. The Haddock was melt in the mouth, cooked absolutely fantastic and the chips were excellent, proper Chippy Style Chips and they were cooked really well.
It was 10x better than the other venue I visited aka Ocean Fish Bar and I would highly recommend for anyone visiting Cleethorpes to visit Steels Corner House, excellent value and the staff are friendly and do their best to make the visit and...
