[Re-reviewed 2023]

This pub just keeps getting better. See end for 2023 update.

One of our go-to places in Skipton as out of town visitors; friendly staff, good beer, good food, dog friendly; best of all, in such an historic setting, a pub as they all should be, showing its historic higgledy-piggledy architecture and growth - multi-roomed, snugs etc. Give it a go after visiting the castle and/or church and you'll feel that the same ghosts have passed through them all.

2023 update - so here we are again, after several years and Covid, and this pub just keeps on giving. There are so many decent-to-good pubs in Skipton, but of the traditional "olde English", unspoilt, good mix of locals and visitors pubs, this is the best. The food is excellent and not at gastropub prices, the beers are well kept, and the atmosphere great, the buzz of happy diners and drinkers not overwhelmed by the excellent background music playlist. Clean toilets, clean pub, and a building which has not has its history erased by trendy remodellings; a whole assortment of rooms to choose from, from snugs to saloons to quirky corners.

As if it couldn't get any better there's also the most diverse selection of crisps and snacks I've ever seen in 40 years of trawling English pubs, water and biscuits for the dog, and the irrepressibly welcoming and cheerful bar manageress, Roz.

Be warned, this place will be RAMMED in the summer, but make sure you put it on your itinerary. In the winter just come...

The place is superb from every angle. Inside it has a beautiful atmosphere of a pub and outside has a good amount of seating area. The expert is beyond world-class. The staff are neat, polite and very sweet. We were welcomed by Grace, she was so polite and understanding. In her look it can be seen that there is no hard task for her and she will execute everything smooth and with ease. After we were seated, Georgia served our drinks. I should be honest and say that she poses the brightest, charismatic smile, I have ever came across. The food was so delicious it reminds me of my mum's meals. The place is worth a visit. Definitely, the staff are the diamonds in the crown of "The castle Inn" . Should you be in the area, I strongly recommend to pay a visit and enjoy...

A bold statement to make but it's true - This is one of the best pubs I have ever been to!! My partner and I went in everyday on our 4 night trip. Everything about it was 5 stars, the atmosphere, the decor, the hundreds of trinkets, the very friendly and attentive staff and the food was reasonable priced and very tasty.

I would highly recommend the Steak and Ale pie and the Roast Beef giant Yorkshire Pudding (although would have been that bit nicer if it was homemade). My partner has the 'Blue Burger's from the specials board twice.

We loved the Sunday night quiz, very well organized and not too difficult with some extra fun rounds added in.

A must visit if you are in Skipton. Will definitely be back on our next visit...

What a great place! Food is really really good, some of the best pub food we've ever had. Menu is excellent and the standard is higher than most . We came for the day on a Wednesday in August,so it was busy . Rare sunny day so we sat outside, plenty of tables , smoking and dogs allowed. Sevice is quick ,the staff are very polite and friendly and food is top quality. We only went inside to order and as you walk in it looks small but there's actually loads of space and tables. Nothing bad to say about this place . Recommended if you're visiting Skipton

A cosy, old meets new 1800s coaching inn. Full of character, with warm and welcoming staff and a nice selection on tap. My wife and I had the Mushroom & Guinness Pie with chips & veg and it was very tasty, perfect for a rainy March Wednesday. I washed it down with a pint of Gamma Ray. The pub is exactly my kind of pub. Homely, quirky; the kind of pub one thinks of when old English pub comes to mind. I would definitely recommend it, and if I lived nearby, I would become part of the furniture.
