We stumbled into our stay at the Edgcumbe Arms, and we are so glad we did. Our first road trip in the UK since moving over 2 years ago, we wanted to visit the Cornwall area but really didn’t have a compass as to where to stay.

Our main priority was location and value for money – and we were quite overwhelmed by how the Edgcumbe Arms exceeded our expectations by those criteria, but also service, room quality and food and drink.

Quite frankly, every element of our stay (Aug. 7-10, 2021) was exceptional measured against the highest standards. The team provides an experience that impresses by all criteria, making for a relaxing and fulfilling stay. Ironically, while there are so many places to visit in the UK, as we look to our next possible trip, the lure of Cornwall and another stay at the Edgcumbe Arms is very tempting even through we have so many other places to visit.

A quick summary of our experience, point by point:

Room: We stayed in Room #9, which has a nice layout, is light and bright, and has an excellent view of the waterfront (see photos). The bed was firm and comfortable, and you can hear the waves if you leave the windows open. Everything was super-clean. Immaculate. Sparkling. There is outside seating for the pub, so if patrons enjoying themselves bothers you, that might raise a concern, but the pub closes at a reasonable hour, and even a lively post-wedding crowd did not bother us with the windows open. Additionally, there is a ferry and a bus stop immediately across the street, and when the bus turns around you can hear the warning klaxon. Again, this was not an issue for us, particularly because we are early rises. For us the room was ideal – spacious and well-appointed with a perfect two-seat spot to drink morning coffee while looking out the window.

Food: We had breakfast every morning of our stay and dinner once. The full-service kitchen delivers wholesome meals made with quality ingredients. The portions are generous but can be scaled back to your taste, and the service is fast and highly professional. On one occasion I witnessed one of the managers serving a table and deal quite gracefully and diplomatically with a very difficult family. The bar stocks some lovely Cornish beauties, and I owe the bar staff a debt of gratitude for recommending Mena Dhu. Breakfast was a treat every morning. It would be great if they could start it a little earlier (if I recall it’s 9 am) but considering the challenges of keeping hospitality teams staffed with the best people, if 9 is when their cooks/servers can start service, then it’s worth the wait for us early risers, really…

Location: Plymouth is a quick ferry ride across the bay, where Royal William Yard and other attractions are an easy convenient walk. Mount Edgcumbe Park is an easy-must see as it is a quick walk right from the Edgcumbe Arms. For us it was easy to discover activities and attractions yet have a central “home base” to strike out from. Amenities: We really liked the fact there is parking reserved for guests, making it easy to take the ferry and not think twice about the car. The Wi-Fi access is a little slow, admittedly, and an upgrade would be nice, but it is there, and it’s free. If they do decide to upgrade it in the future, it would make an amazing place even better.

Service: This is a differentiator for the Edgcumbe Arms. Everyone is remarkably attentive, friendly and helpful. I give the entire team top marks for giving us such an...

My experience in this Hotel/B&B On my birthday I went here. Lovely area and place. Views amazing. Room smaller than others spotless through. Bar expensive in my opinion and closes very early! Bar staff very polight ( to polight in my opinion) I'm my opinion I would park in Plymouth and use the passenger ferry to cross. Davenport to the Pub around 55 mins to do 11 miles! I wouldn't drive it in the darkness! Bad points about my stay and 1 star. Bathroom smells horrible, taps on sink move when you turn them on. Almost sick when I walked in the bathroom. (This had been reported in other reviews and not repaired) Why? The breakfast was below par ( cheap and dye) Management/ owner: aboused my review on a booking site! The customer is always right remember! The price I paid for the room is overpriced in my opinion as all in Plymouth and Cornwall, due to covid loss maybe! Would I visit this place again : No ADD to my Review after owners response : 1,You said about my spelling in your reply, have you ever throught I'm dyslexic ?? 2, You say Cornwall and Plymouth isn't the place for me because of prices, so you saying I am cheap ? Maybe you need to look at some of my £700 a night rooms. 3, Regarding your staff being to polight. I did as them not to call me sir. This is not a bad point! 4, The bar closes around 9pm I was told. You told me on booking.com its open until 10pm! 5,The roads is not a criticism just informing others the roads are narrow and if you follow your satellite navigation the roads it takes you alone are single track roads. 6, I never said I was unhappy with my stay. Your assuming this ! 7, when you guests leave maybe you should ask if everything was OK 8, I like to thank you for your polight response to my reviews! Maybe you need not to discriminate your customers/ guests on how they spell and learn how to response to your reviewers and not be so rude and learn what your reviewers are saying to you or perhaps your the wrong person to be a...

I booked a table for 14 People on a Saturday afternoon for a friends 60th Birthday. When I received the booking confirmation it directed me to the website with the promise of saving 10%. At the website you can purchase a 'Membership Card' to receive the 10% discount, a 'Daily' one or an 'Annual' one. I paid £2 for the daily one thinking that I could apply it to the booking that I had coming up. Unfortunately it wasn't until I had paid for it that I realised it only applied to the actual day that I purchased the membership, not the day that the meal was booked for. On the day of the booking a member of staff from the Edgcumbe called me to confirm the booking and I explained the situation to them to be told that there was nothing they could do and the discount would only apply to my meal anyway not the entire booking and apparently this is all made clear in the T&C's. I explained that I hadn't read the T&C's but the general impression was rather misleading and if they could just refund my £2 then I would be happy, but was told that they could not do this as they do not have the authority, so I asked if I could speak to someone who did, to be told that this has happened before and there is nothing that can be done about it. Clearly the offer of the discount card is misleading other people not just me but there was no understanding of the situation which for the sake of £2 on what turned out to be over a £200 spend by the group seemed very little to do to leave me fully satisfied. That said the food and service was good......just don't get duped into buying the discount card without reading the...

We had a long wait for food but was warned which was great. The food was beautiful but we we're disappointed we weren't offered peas without mint. It was like eating fish and toothpaste! The fish tho was tasty and beautiful. Lots of places to sit inside and outside. Sadly there is a lack of signage for disabled visitors. There are four steps into both front entrances. However after using the toilet which is fully wheelchair accessible disabled friendly with a ramp down into the pub. Turns out you have to go around the side of the pub in through the fire exit to come down the ramp into the pub. Totally recommend visiting. It's been years since our last visit but we will be back. We received a warm friendly welcome. Food portions are huge although you can order from the children's menu for a small size meal. 4* because of the disabled tradesman entrance once we found it.
