I've been wanting to visit for a while, since they took over Hayman's in Swanage. Overall I wasn't that impressed (although I want to go back and try the famous Pizza).
Store felt dark, products not that well displayed. But most importantly I can only describe the service as surly.
Having chatted for ages to the previous person, I got a what do you want (when they came back to the counter) and no thank you.
The food was OK, but didn't make me go "YES YES YES"
And finally, because I often do, something that makes me smile. This is not about the place I'm reviewing!
I got a new job at a bakery. I took the job because I kneaded the dough.
How I Mark I may mark differently to some other reviewers, some might see this as harsh, others may see it as fair. But here's how I look at it:
5 star - WOW. I want to go back and look forward to doing so. They delivered everything expected and more. The 'more; is normally about the service or attitude of the staff. 4 star - GOOD. They delivered everything I wanted and a bit more. I recommend them and would go back. 3 star - OK. They delivered what I expected, I would go back if I needed to, although don't currently plan on doing so. 2 star - Not very good. I didn't get what I expected and the service wasn't good. I don't recommend this place. I might get dragged back here, although will always try to avoid it 1 star - This was rubbish. Don't go there, I certainly won't go there again. I didn't get what I wanted, the people were unhelpful and I didn't enjoy...

I mark this place down for charging 80p for alternative milks. That is the highest price I have seen anywhere. I think it's about time all cafes stopping charging extra for plant-based milks. A litre carton of organic Oatly Barista costs £1.70 (at Waitrose!! Not a wholesale price). It is not that much more than cow's milk. Depending on which coffee you're having, in my experience a litre of oat milk will make between 10 and 20 drinks. So, say conservatively that it's 10. That means on each litre of oat milk, the takings at Italian Bakery are £8, against a cost of £1.70 (or £1.50 for non-organic), giving a profit of 370 per cent! If in fact the litre does more than 10 drinks, then the profit is even greater. And bear in mind that when a plant-based milk is used, the shop is not using dairy milk, which is built into the usual prices.
When plant-based milks were a novel, fringe item, it was understandable to charge a little extra for them. But that is not the case now. And 80p is way too much, even if a small charge can...
Read moreThe Pizza was a delight and only soured by the belligerent attitude and miserable face of the customer facing assistant ( Natalie ). Having phoned in and told to wait 1 minute, I was put on hold, after twelve minutes I walked to the place and bad attitude Natalie was cleaning the coffee machine - I half expected a cue a mile long! I received a less than genuine apology. A few customers came in whilst I was waiting and they didn't really get service with a smile. I genuinely hope Natalie learns from my review, ups her game and becomes the best she really can be. All that aside the Pizza...
