Don't waste your money! Went here the other day, the worst decision I've ever made. Ordered the afternoon tea, the worst one I've ever had. It took over half an hour to arrive. The service when it arrived was terrible. The bread on the sandwiches felt stale. The tea was nice, but you can't really mess up tea to be honest. The sponge cake was very dry and not freshly made. The coffee cake was also very dry and not very appealing to the eye. The worst thing was til last. The best part of an afternoon tea is the scone in my opinion. I was very disappointed with what happened next. I wasn't really taking much notice, until I saw the scone that was left for me with something on it. For some reason I thought it had blue berries in it. I was totally wrong. It was a massive chunk of mold on the scone, which also appeared on the other one too. The scones were stale too, you could throw them on the floor and they'll probs bounce back. When I complained to the waitress she was very apologetic, I felt sorry for the poor girl. There was no attempt of a refund for the horrid experience, they took a long time trying to sort some more for us, but by that point we were too tired of waiting and were put off the whole experience completly. I've been to many afternoon tea experiences, but I've never once experienced such a horrid service and even worse food. Never returning again. Mold is very serious on food, extremely dangerous. It could give such bad food...

Sadly the food is still vile, came here today for sunday lunch and I just dont even know where to start . food arrived.....stone cold the plate had more heat in it than the roasts and when I say roast I mean over cooked boiled to death beef! Every item was cold even the kids goujons so I'm not sure what went wrong in the kitchen,I was informed the chef is from the ivy and after this meal today I can see why he doesnt work there anymore! Food was taken back to kitchen and returned to the table within 2 minutes had clearly been microwaved to add heat but not long enough to be above the recommended guidelines for heating food up! we gathered the roasts are plated up in mass to save time and hot gravy poured on them to give then impression it is all hot but on one plate you have over cooked dry tough beef and next to it under cooked raw broccoli?! We were given a refund and a dessert which was lovely but suppose you cant go wrong with an ordered in cake! Next time slow cook your beef over night in red wine and at least add some flavour! The items included in the roast would have been incredible had it have been hot! Drinks were ok but even the cocktails were not what they usually are, not sure what went wrong today but it was an insult to a Sunday roast! Thankyou to the kitchen porter and manager who fixed this for us, although an explanation from this so called chef from the ivy would have...

4/9/13 went to Lowthers, beautiful hot day, really busy, ordered drinks for 3 with Paninis. Think I made the mistake of not ordering the Panini melt. I ordered chicken and bacon panini and can tell you chips were greasy, salad was lovely as the dressing tasted nice. I opened my Panini to put some salad inside and was disgusted to find there was hardly any filling inside. There was bits of flattened chicken inside and 2 pieces of sliced bacon about the size of a 2 pence piece. I asked the waitress to have a look and she took it away immediately. When my replacement meal came it was marginally better. However, I think what the catering staff are doing was trying to shred the chicken like you shred duck and then it appeared to be flattened on the Panini. This was to make the chicken etc go further. If I had of ordered a Panini melt, I would not have noticed the absence of the filling due to the cheese melting. We paid just over ÂŁ31.00 and I WOULD NOT RETURN. Have been here in previous years when in York but NEVER AGAIN. Staff...

Glad I looked at Google reviews after my visit. Had a great feeling right after walking through the door by very welcoming young lady. Met the general manager Ellis may be her name bur I am but with names. She seems to have done an amazing job since renovation. Place is stylish and tidy, after little wander around you’ll find out that it’s actually an enormous place. Great seating outside. Haven’t had food so cannot comment on that. Hotel room is cosy and very tidy, maintaining high standards. Area is extremely convenient to visitors of York with 5-10 mins walking distance to everything you’d like to see in York! Price for room definitely doesn’t reflect in the area and you will definitely make you money worth, I found my stay pretty cheap for the location. 100% recommended, would definitely return if visiting again.

The only thing going for it is the riverside location. Ordered (after 15 mins of being ignored) half a moreti a pint of moreti and a phili steak. Beer choices were dull and available from every other poor quality establishment. No attempt at standing out as a place to go for quality beer. I’d like to tell you what the food and drink were like but it still hasn’t arrived. I’d have left 10 mins ago if they hadn’t have taken my money up front. Edit: the drinks finally arrived. They were about as lovely as if they’d been sat on the side for 20 minutes. Pubs like this don’t deserve to survive. It has everything going for it and somehow it managed to be a terrible experience.

The Lowther is in a nice location by the river. There were plenty of draught drinks, but sadly, no cask conditioned real ales. The staff are very friendly and welcoming. I haven't tried the food, but the menu looked tempting, and the food coming out of the kitchen looked very nice. There is outside seating by the river, and it gets very busy on a sunny day.
