I chose the Classic Cheese, after perusing the menu at my leisure in our room at the Star & Garter beforehand only to be questioned on my choices in front of the waitress and made to doubt myself. The waitress was sent away to give us a few more minutes, where I steadied the ship and explained my choice: I wanted gem lettuce, not shredded, and I wanted American cheese so that it would melt properly, after hearing the arguments of Mr Substack on the merits of American cheese vs mature cheddars. I also wanted to avoid onions. I added jalapeños and gherkins. Fran followed suit. I rest my case. We also shared a plate of cheesy, chilli salsa, and guac cajun fries, which were the bomb. The burger looked a little sweaty on arrival, like the top lip of a paedo outside a Kindergarten. Not the most appetizing aspect. It also had a small sandwich stake through its heart, which carries all the warning signs of runniness, and - yea - it came to pass. The runninness was this burger’s downfall, but its upfall was muchly on the upside. From the first couple of bites the patty had me in its beefy, crispy grasp. There was some crunch, a hint of fruity topnote. The gherkin was the first to flee: a full-length slice. Then came one fifth of the back end of the patty - kerplonk! When trying to piece the patty back in later, the tomato centre fell out. There was also much grease of finger and plate. I wasn’t that bothered, but it can’t go without saying. Overall, a great tastitude and satisfying mouthfeel, with varied and slightly precarious bites. The chippy chips all came after and were a cajun...
Read moreThis is my absolute favourite restaurant in all of Cornwall! This place is so good that my girlfriend and I needed to impose a "once a month" rule because our Meat Counter intake was reaching borderline addictive levels! Everything about this place is fantastic: from the fantastic interior design, the iconic posters on the wall, the VHS tapes always playing something entertaining, the nostalgic vibe of the layout, the fun arcade machines, and the exciting but simultaneously intimate vibe - it's the perfect dining experience. Not to mention the food is absolutely immaculately made, it feels like its cooked with genuine love every time! They use local suppliers such as Da Bara bakery (meaning "good bread" in Welsh, I presume in Cornish too because it's basically the same language) which is always a plus. My favourite menu item is the Amy Swinehouse burger, a classic pulled pork burger adorned with delicious melted American cheese. But everything on the menu is a must-have, you can't possibly go wrong with anything on the menu! Go here if you want to get...
Read moreThis place has ruined burgers for me completely! Came to Cornwall on my honeymoon and thought I'd try this place for some dinner... What a surprise I was in for at this point! The place looks incredible inside, the staff actually look like they enjoy working there and the biggest part is the food is like nothing I've ever eaten before! Quick service and delivery of food, I had the muthacluckin with the hog Chuck and cheese and my wife had the flat dog and chips and were surprised with just how godly this food tastes with such little time taken to make it. Absolutely over the moon with this place and I wasn't even judged for the terrible red Hawaiian shirt my wife absolutely hates. Big thanks to the staff! ILL...
