We live locally and whenever we’re in Malton we visit the Purple Carrot as we always choose to support small businesses who provide vegan food. Although the food there usually looks appetising we’ve sometimes found the staff to be a bit stuck-up and snooty, but have continued to support them nonetheless.
Our visit last week however was the last straw, and our final visit.
The counter service was lacklustre and inflexible, the table service bordering on rude.
Upstairs, I’d caught the attention of a member of staff and asked for a spoon for the coffees, she wordlessly went away and returned with a spoon from what I later found was an area containing cutlery, condiments, glasses and bottles of water - not that she bothered to inform us of this. Her attitude put me off asking if there were any napkins.
On our departure, behind my back, the same staff member indicated to her colleague behind the counter, pointed at me behind my back and made a ‘mental’ gesture with her hand against her forehead. How do I know she did this? My partner who was several steps behind me witnessed it.

Read moreThe food is really nice. The cafe upstairs is pleasant but very small. We were the only couple eating in early afternoon yesterday. We each had a small mixed veg tart which came with a salad, and a pot of tea each. I paid with a card but didn’t notice until today that the price was £29.40! I assumed this was a mistake as the tarts were approximately (I can’t recall the exact prices) £4.50 each and the salads about £2.50 or so. I phoned this morning to say I thought I’d been overcharged. The lady I spoke to said the tarts and salad were £11.50 each and “my colleague would have told you that”. First, if I had been told that was the price I’d have queried it as it bore no relation to the marked prices of the items. Second, why would her colleague have told me the price when it was marked on the items? Third, from the response I get the strong impression this is not the first time this has happened. Which impression is confirmed by reading the reviews. We won’t be...
Read moreMixed experience - lovely cafe with nice vegan/vegetarian options but seems needlessly overpriced to dine in + overcharged us. if you wish to dine in, you need to order a Meal/lunch plate. Meaning any fridge item (even worth £2.5) will need to be paired with salad etc and will cost meal/ lunch plate prices (I.e., £8.5 with 1 small serving of side salad/ £10.5 with 2). Please read full review/see photos to know how it doesn’t make sense.
Staff is friendly. Food tastes average, Indian spices. Tap water has no extra charges. However, Portions are generally small. Felt overpriced. Eg. Meal price for a samosa we ordered (which is £2.5 pounds on its own) was £8.5 with just addition of 1 side salad portion. Why?
I also feel we were overcharged, we ordered 3 fridge item, 2 were served with 1 side salad and one on its own and still paid around £25, not sure why we paid 3 lunch plate prices when weren’t served with?
Otherwise ambiance is lovely,...
