Expensive and exclusionary.

The atmosphere was stale and unsettling (the entire place smelt like a piss filled ashtray), we hadn't been here before and it felt as though outsiders were not welcome.

The staff were abrupt and honestly just rude, forgetting the order and then shoving a card machine in my direction without even telling me the price (£5 per drink 😯).

We were there at closing and whilst I understand the need to clear out from working in retail myself, this was done in such a rude way... As my friend and I were the only ones asked to leave, we had finished our drinks, but there were still several full tables who weren't being kicked out and a game of poker underway. I'm not saying that we were singled out for being younger but I wouldn't put it past the woman.

If you want an old man pub, this would definitely fit the aesthetic... But there are so many in York which are cheaper, have better trained staff, and which are better smelling.

It has the potential to be a very nice old pub but the management obviously doesn't care about...

Good old fashioned pub.

Came in after a long trek with my 5 year old to find something that was a) open b) did kids food and c) didn't require a second mortgage.

Was greeted by a very welcoming bar server and provided the menu. The food unlike most of York isn't full of gimmicks, it's good solid pub food. I ordered the blue cheese burger and my daughter the kids burger . Service was extremely friendly without being intrusive.

Both came very quickly despite it being a lunchtime in the school holidays and the portions were fantastic. The food was well cooked and the chips are proper homemade cut from actual potatoes.

Really recommend this place if you are like me and hate the pretentiousness of...

Shame. Stopped doing food. We didn't find out till we tried to order after buying drinks. We really wanted to dine and it used to be nice meals. Still advertising selling food outside but they didn't. Disappointed 😞....... in reply to your reply below..... We 100 percent are not the ones thay you say "if we are correct in remembering your visit, we believe your party were informed that the kitchen would be closing ten minutes early that day, however the manager (who was in the kitchen that day) was prepared to wait for you to place your order". This is all nothing to do with us so it sounds like someone else was disappointed too but not posted...

The Red Lion is a great British pub to chitchat, relax, drink and participate in their quiz. It is cozy, warm, inviting and laidback. The workers are also just as nice and helpful. However, do not come here for their food. The photos look nice, but are old and the staff making it is new. Our food tasted at best decent, but plating a look is the level of a child. Fortunately the food wasn’t that expensive otherwise I’d be upset due to it not being really worth it.

For anybody who likes historic pubs this is a gem. The pub wraps around the bar with lots of ancient dark timbers and fireplaces. Been here many times. Jorvic insisted on a beer from Ainstey Ales, despite it being a Rudgate brewery pub. Proudly brewed in the York Wapentake. ( An area between the three ridings of Yorkshire, North, West and East...no South. Something to do with Viking lands.) A beer patio to the side gets packed in summer. Popular for pub grub.

We visited York for the day and tried to find somewhere for some dinner that didn't seem exotic (I don't wanna eat fancy food) and somewhere that wasn't gonna cost a fortune. We seen this pub and thought this is it.. we spent about £35 on 2 meals, a side and 2 drinks. I had loaded nachos and my fiancee had loaded chips. They were absolutely amazing. Staff were so nice. Little intimate areas you can sit and an amazing sized beer garden which is a sun trap.
