Having used this restaurant for either takeaways or to eat-in on may occasions (at least 15 times) since moving to Shrewsbury, I was most disappointed with our latest visit. The starters were fine and one of our group ordered a lamb dish for main course which was also fine. However, the remaining 3 of us ordered Chicken Jaipur, a dish recommended by the chef. The dish was extremely tasty but the chicken resembled slices of shoe leather; dry, tough and utterly tasteless. We called the supervising waiter over and informed him of this. He said he would speak to the chef and when he returned he claimed that it was just because of the way it was cooked, but did not offer to change the dishes or offer any other alternative even though the main ingredient was inedible. As a result we all left the chicken on our plates and merely consumed the sauce with our naan breads and rice (which were all paid for extras). We expected a reasonable discount to reflect the low quality of the main course, but when presented with the bill we were amazed to be offered only a £10 deduction or £3.33 each from a total bill in excess of £140. When we questioned this with the supervisor we were basically told "take it or leave it". When we asked to speak to the manager, he refused to interact with us. This level of product, service and customer interaction is totally unprofessional and unacceptable. We will never be frequenting Third Place again and neither will we be recommending it. A Nepalese restaurant nearby (namely Avatar) is head and shoulders above this in...
Read moreWe visited the Sunday afternoon / evening buffet at 17.30 and were only the second party as it was so early, but it got busier later. The food was pretty standard and most dishes were tasty, my favourites were veg bhuna and lamb saag, there was also a hotter dal aloo dish & the obligatory chicken korma & tikka masala as well as chicken bhuna & chicken jalfrezi. The starters were similarly standard & okay. I liked that there were desserts, orange pieces, rice pudding and another beige Bangladeshi dessert which I liked best, but the (one) cake seemed bought at a supermarket, maybe nice for kids but seemed superfluous to me. It was good value nice food but the experience was let down by the service. The waiters seemed only attentive when it came to selling drinks, didn't even give us plates for the buffet and almost looked at me funny when I asked for one, very odd. You only get one plate here, which I think is fair enough as it reduces food waste, but the staff demeanor around obtaining the plates was quite unwelcoming. The staff also didn't know anything about the food and weren't helpful with information about the unfamiliar dessert I enjoyed. As someone else observed, food labelling is rudimentary. Each dish was marked with a post-it note with some abbreviated scribbles on, L Sag or C K for chicken knrma. You could say it had a certain homely charm but together with the lack of attentiveness from the staff the effect was more one of carelessness. ...
Read moreHaving recently visited The Curry House and Avatar we had high hopes for Third Place, especially considering we saw in the newspaper that they were going for some sort of award.
On arrival we weren't asked for the time of our booking or our names, which considering they were almost completely full seemed an odd start. Fortunately we sat upstairs which was a lot less crowded
The food was overall very disappointing, a platter for 4 contained only two of almost everything. Two small pieces of lamb, two small samosas etc if it hadn't been for the four onion bhajis I'd have thought it was actually a platter for two. I imagine a platter for two would be like sharing a small starter! Bizarrely it all sat an an oily plate, like nothing had been drained and the cooking oils dripped to create a puddle for it all to sit in
We opted for two of the signature dishes and a pathia, they were all just about 'ok', the Bahar was literally sat on a puddle of oil just like the starter. The breads were a real mixed bag. The plain one was ok, the keema naan undercooked and the peshwari burnt
For three people with a few drinks each it broke the £100 mark, not outrageous, but definitely not worth it.
Given that within a couple of hundred yards there is four other places that are all better I'm not sure why I would ever return here
I can only imagine that their award winning chef was out at a competition or something and we encountered the B Team. Or perhaps even...
