I rarely leave reviews, but my experience at Urban 44 Cafe in Hessle was so disappointing that I feel compelled share.
I witnessed the owner speaking to his staff in an incredibly rude and condescending manner, as if they were beneath him. It was uncomfortable and completely unprofessional. No one deserves to be spoken to like that, especially in front of customers. You can tell the staff are trying their best, but the way they’re treated is just appalling.
Food and coffee aside, the toxic energy coming from management made it impossible to enjoy the visit. I won’t be coming back, and I hope the staff find better places to work where they’re treated with respect.
Your response only reinforces the concerns raised in my review. Instead of addressing the issue professionally, you’ve chosen to make personal accusations and assumptions about who I may or may not know, none of which are relevant to the customer experience I personally witnessed.
I was in the cafe. I saw how you interacted with staff, and I formed my opinion based on that. Dismissing negative feedback as “harassment” and threatening legal or police action simply because someone shared a poor experience doesn’t reflect well on you or your business.
If multiple people are sharing similar concerns, perhaps it’s worth reflecting on why that might be happening rather than attacking them for speaking up.
My review stands as an honest account of what I experienced.
Instead of addressing customer feedback with professionalism, you’ve chosen to belittle it with sarcasm and demands. Calling a genuine concern a “little whinge” only proves the point I made in my review, that respect doesn’t seem to be a priority, either for staff or customers.
As for the CCTV, I’m not obligated to prove my visit to justify my opinion. A professional business owner would take criticism seriously, not try to discredit it with intimidation or mockery.

We were not told that there would be such a wait when we came into the cafe and plenty of tables that came in after us were being served. When we were finally asked if we would like to place our order we was told that we would be waiting at least another 40 minutes for food.
I paid for the drinks and left as I was really unhappy with the service, we were not told of the long wait times when we came in and when I spoke with someone to address this was told they were making all customers aware as stated we were not made aware, I was then told that the reason for our wait was because staff had called in sick and to not worry about paying for the drinks we had ordered when i advised i had already paid i was told again sorry no refund was offered.
Had we had been made aware of the wait coming in we would have known what to expect and wouldn't have been so disappointed, also if you can't cater to the amount of tables you are taking don't take them.
We have visited so many times before and never had any issues but today has put me off ever returning again. Poor service all round.
updated to respond We were not advised once that there would be such a long wait, had someone advised of this then we would have had our expectations set, instead part of our drinks order was forgotten and taking our food order was also forgotten. When I spoke with you would advised not to worry about the drinks before I told you I'd paid for them. We waited 30 minutes for a coffee. As stated we have visited many times before and had a pleasant experience but the service today was enough to put me off returning to experience the same again. You said yourself that six tables had walked our because of the wait when I raised this to you so why we were not made aware of the long wait times...
Read moreI really don’t like to leave a negative review for a small businesses but unfortunately this had to be shared and just know, it is coming from a good place.
Anyone with allergies: I wouldn’t recommend this place (right now) as they’re not able to cater for this.
It’s a really conveniently placed cafe across the road from the doctor’s surgery so I can’t imagine many people would check a Google review before visiting - I know I didn’t.
Feedback for the cafe: please don’t be scared of people with allergies. You can be allergic to absolutely anything and as long as you give that person the information they ask, they can make an informed decision. Don’t make the decision for them and ask them to leave, this is discrimination and not kind. It’s likely, like us, that we would stay and support your small business by ordering a drink and paying with cash (as I know it’s preferred). I hope this feedback is taken in the way it’s intended.
I’m not going to share the experience we had as I can see a few others have already had similar experiences and it’s not fruitful. What is needed is for the cafe to understand allergies better, knowledge is everything.
