Living extremely locally - firstly I have to say that on good days I feel extremely fortunate to have this little vibrant pub so close to home...on their mad/bad days - not quite so much. Their patrons couldn't give a toss about where they park and late at night - the street can get quite raucous.
Two of us popped in here for an early dinner after a round of golf at West Essex.
Food here can usually be described as "steady but unremarkable"...it reminded me of why I hadn't eaten here for over two years.
Cod was beautiful...but with overcooked (hence slightly bitter chips) and an incredibly light "smearing/cum-stain" of tartare sauce and mushy-peas, which is now being described as a "pea-puree"...I guess that's inflationary cost-cutting for you.
You used to get small silver pots of both on the side - and very neatly stacked chunky chips!
It was almost as if the chips today were left-overs from lunch service and had just been plonked back in the fryer and re-served. These little tricks that kitchen staff carry out behind your back - in order to save money. Clearly cost-pressures are prevalent and cost-cutting rife.
It was just about okay. Admittedly a clean plate from me but it was 6pm and I'd eaten nothing since the day before!
It'll probably be at least another two years - before I give the place another go. Shame...but whilst we're being forced to endure a Labour Government...we're living in some very desperate times - and we all know what desperate...

ย ย ย Read moreThis pub is a great little find! ๐ From the minute I walked in there with my elderly parents it felt like Iโd walked into something special. Itโs the kind of place you could go to on your own and people would talk to you. There is a great vibe going on in there.
The food was great, memorable touches like their pork pieces served with their own gravy. They were so good we ordered another portion. The staff were attentive and you could see they are a tight knit team with bar staff helping with serving food.
I loved the apple crumble and home made curry. This is a gem of a pub with proper pub grub.
Finally Iโd mentioned that I wanted to meet the owner and I dare say heโd had a busy day but he took the time to come and speak to us and my elderly parents. Itโs little touches like this that makes The Three Colts outstanding. My parents loved getting to eat proper homemade food. We will...
