The positives: the staff were efficient and helpful, the chateaubriand which was delicious and pretty perfectly cooked, the mushroom had amazing flavour, I would definitely would have liked more than one. The chips were chunky chips (which I prefer) and were yummy. I loved seeing the wider selection of puddings and great to see not just sticky toffee pudding and crumble on the menu. There was also a lovely selection of starters and mains that I rarely see in pubs. The negatives; the tables for two were up against a wall so makes the small table even more cramped as you have no elbow room on one side, although this will mostly be determined by the space they have available. The tables for two don’t have the nice chairs either, from my memory. There were some small issues with the food for example the tomato was tasteless and was a bit tough in the middle, the onion rosti was horrible, I’m not sure it was cooked properly either as I’m sure I could taste raw flour on mine. That said I don’t like onions much and certainly not big chunks of partially cooked onion. The negatives with the dessert: although beautifully presented I was a bit disappointed with the blackcurrant mousse as I found it to be quite heavy and sweet. I would have preferred it lighter in texture and less sweet. The base of the mousse was also very sweet and had an unpleasant gritty texture to it, so I would not order it again. Even with the negatives I was generally impressed so with a few tweaks eating at The Spring Tavern could be a pretty perfect experience. It’s certainly a cut above most Gastropubs down to their interesting and varied menu, overall great cooking and good service. It’s easily the best pub to eat in for miles around. (I think the Derby Arms menu is the same as The Spring Tavern but as the service is often poor, we no...
Read moreI have been there a couple of times for drinks and always enjoyed this pub. I have enjoyed it so much that I wanted to have my post wedding meal there. Whilst the actual pub is lovely and the food looks delicious, it seems there isn't an event member of staff and the whole process was a shambles. I made an enquiry online and was awaiting for them to contact me to discuss and confirm the booking. After weeks of silence, I eventually called them. I was informed they had my booking, when stating that no one contacted me, it didn't seem to bother them. Was then told that I will soon receive the set menus and that I will have to make choices. Again, no email or phone call... I eventually sent them an inquiry online and someone emailed me the normal menus, clearly didn't take notice that my booking was a large group or in fact didn't take notice of my booking at all...I eventually sent them an email to cancel the booking and booked somewhere else. And of course, I never received an email confirming they had my cancellation, and of course on the day, I had a phone call asking to confirm my booking. It really is a pity as I really wanted to have a nice meal there with my family and friends as it is a lovely pub and the food always looks delicious. They really need to sort their event organisation. I worked in hospitality, so I do know it is not rocket science, just communicate with your customers instead of leaving them...
Read moreHaving been to the Spring Tavern previously I booked this for close friends and family after my husbands funeral. Food was booked for 2pm we arrived at 2.20 with approximately 50 family and friends. No food was ready all they seemed concerned with was getting drinks which were being paid for with only 1 bar person serving. I asked 3 times where the food was and was told I am serving drinks you were not here at 2pm therefore we waited before we started cooking. I finally said at 3.05 that if food was not served in 5 minutes they could cancel the food. Food arrived 3 minutes later!!!!!!! Food served was ciabatta sandwiches which were dry and full of mayonnaise, where were the lobster and prawns? Cheese was cheese spread! Pizza dry, 3 bowls of chips, pittas and dips, poor. There was nothing that could be said to be enjoyable. Cakes were bought out at 4.20 when most people had gone home. After a very upsetting day and to have the shambles that greeted us was unforgivable, I would never book this venue again. People went home hungry without having eaten anything and those that did eat had dry, stale and poor food. Poor, upsetting, very expensive for what it was. Money was put before customers, poor management and poor staffing. For the money that was made behind the bar today I should have insisted on a full refund but having just lost my husband I was not on the right frame of...
