I have been here twice, both times on stopovers between Wales and London. I originally found The Tall Ship through TripAdvisor and as it's big sell was fish and seafood - a particular favourite of mine it was a clear stand out from the list.
Stepping into what is from the outside a basic pub it is split into two parts. The pub with traditional bar is the main part and the dining room goes down the side of the building from the end of the bar to the back and is well lit by lots of windows. The staff are very friendly and the man who served the first time a couple of years ago recognized us when we came back a week ago.
The menu is not big, which is always a good sign and while most dishes are fish and seafood there are some tasty looking meat dishes too, although I have not tried them. The food is excellent and I particularly love the muscles which is done traditionally in various styles. They specialise in crab dishes, which my partner enjoyed, particularly a crab and scallop thermidor. I went for lemon sole goujons with chips which were great. The portions are generous, so much so that we struggled to finish our main courses and we were very hungry when we arrived as we had had a very light breakfast when setting off from London.
Would always happily pop back there when I am in the area as I have thoroughly enjoyed both...
Read moreDuring the Easter weekend visit to the city we had a great meal at this Tardis-like pub early on the Saturday evening, on what the welcoming bar staff (landlady?) said was an unusually quiet Saturday night. This suited me. I was recommended a dark bitter, Rutler I think, and my partner had an Otter ale. Both were great, even zesty. We shared a tasty pot of crab, salad, and artisan bread as a starter. And we both each had a large pan-fried sea bass fillet with mango slices, which sounded a bit left-field, but it works really well! The portions of the seasonal veg were also large, and the red cabbage was also very tasty (what's the recipe?!). For deserts, I had the mini-deserts plate and my partner had the sorbet. Both delicious, particularly the chocolate truffle. We left the pub stuffed, and had a walk around the docks, walking like heavily pregnant penguins! When next in the area we'll definitely visit this pub (which we thought was better than the nearby...
Read moreHaving spoke to the Landlord first, he was more than happy for us to dine there with our quiet, elderly dog on new years day 2017, we went in there early new years eve with our dog and had a quiet drink and all was fine, on going back in at around 8pm for one drink the "dragon" of a land lady was extremely rude saying "i hope hes not goin to be running aroud here all night!!" while her extremely brave husband said nothing!! As mentioned before our dog is elderly and was sat in the corner on his lead.......not a chance would he have been running around!!! following this disgusting aggressive attitude towards paying customers we are not dining in there on new years day but are enjoyng a lovely meal in the nearby portivo lounge where ourselves and our quiet furry friend have been made more than welcome even being given water and treats by the lovely staff!! animal lovers stay clear of the...
