A very high 3/5 however there were always things that could have been improved!
Located next to the charming little harbour of Mousehole this restaurant is one of many little gems located across the Cornish coast. The dining experience was very pleasant with a spacious table and swift service from the kitchen. Me and my family visited the restaurant twice and left very satisfied.
My order first day:
Starter - Salt and pepper squid with sweet chili and soy dipping sauce and pickles. Very well presented and tasty however the squid was very mildly seasoned and the pickled veg seemed a little out of place.
Main - Korean Barbecue Pork. This dish was very underwhelming the pork was a slight bit chewy although not deal breaking however the sauce tasted like it came from a supermarket jar.
For desert I had the cheesecake. It was perfectly nice although nothing to brag about.
overall a 3 out of 5 dining experience.
My order second day:
Starter - Butterflied sardines. This starter came from the specials menu and was excellent, nothing I would change!
Main - Scallops in the shell with saffron. Excellent seasoning and felt very rich although if like me it might not be quite enough to fill you up, having four scallops, so I ordered a side of local kale with chili and garlic in additionally I had rosemary and sea salt skinny fries which were both lovely.
Desert - I had a couple scoops of sorbet to finish which was perfect and well deserved after such a rich meal.
The food on my second was near perfect, the fries could have been seasoned a little more generously although very little to complain about.
Unfortunately the waitress on this day was a little careless and didn't seem very friendly. The service wasn't bad by any means but it wasn't as good as the first night.
overall dining experience 4 out of 5
I think the dishes were reasonably priced for the quality and that no corners were cut when preparing dishes. Many ingredients were locally sourced which is always nice to see.
on the first night I had a rather early dinner at around 17:30 however on the second visit we stopped a little later at 19:00.
To sum up this restaurant I would say its great for a high quality meal with the family or friends! I would give this a very high 3 out of 5 and would happily...
Read moreOn arrival we asked if the venue was dog friendly, in fairness to the restaurant, we were told that we couldn’t sit inside but could go outside. The outside facilities were poorly equipped to deal with autumn weather and had we have known, would have chosen to dine elsewhere.
After ordering a meal (beef shin), the waitress came back and warned me that it was a small ball of meat but as it was on the main menu, I proceeded with the order not realising that she had excused how small it would be. When our meal arrived, a sudden torrential downpour with hail began and the waitress watched us getting soaked as she placed our food on the table with an umbrella over us that barely covered half the bench. She then asked if we wanted to take our expensive meal as a takeout which we declined as where would we be able to eat it?! The plates were already soaking wet on arrival. We tried to quickly eat up while my partner had to put up his own umbrella to protect himself which continuously dripped onto the table and ourselves. I had a stream running down the bench so ended up with a wet bottom. Despite being a tasty meal (beef shin), it did not belong on a main meal menu- especially at its pricey cost. We shovelled our wet, pricey meal down while another couple experienced the same issue ahead of us as they had a small dog too.
Myself and my partner appreciate that this was not a dog friendly establishment, however, the restaurant had wooden floor and barely any customers. It would have been lovely to have been offered to come inside OR make sure that the outside area is suitably covered before encouraging guests to dine there. It was a very expensive, disappointing experience- especially as my partner had been before and recommended it. Worst meal of a...
Read moreWent with my wife and 7yo daughter on a Friday evening. Booked ahead for 5pm.
Was seated quickly but took a while to come and take a drinks order as they're were busy seating many people at once.
Ordered the panko crumb Scollops to start and the fish stew for main. Wife had Goat cheese and aubergine with a side of taters. Daughter ordered sausage and chips. We had one round of drinks
Not going to lie, this is on the expensive side. £85 for 2 adults and a child, only one had a starter and no desserts is expensive.
This included a tip, which is automatically put on the bill. I really don't like when restaurants do this. The service we had wasn't a £10 tip service and it creates a socially awkward moment to ask for it to be removed. I normally tip anyway, and tip well, but it's a real bug bear when this is taken out your hand and, anecdotally service drops.
The food was magnificent though. The scallops were massive, the fish stew, fresh and prepared to perfection. I was expecting some small bones but the chef had clearly done their job well. My wife greatly enjoyed her main. My daughter was a little disappointed with the sausage and chips as they weren't sausages, they were chipolatas and there was no veggies to accompany it.
Would I go again? Yes. It was an exception tasty meal. The lack of a 5th star represents dissatisfaction with auto tipping and the let down of the child's meal. The adult meals were...
