We found this place coming off the cruise ship and talking with a couple of the security workers at the port. We asked them, "Where would you go to lunch that's within walking distance of the port?" The two of them thought briefly and said "Tail O' The Bank" with a wonderful Scottish accent thick enough our American ears could barely decipher it. But we got it sorted and had a nice stroll to the restaurant. We ordered at the bar, "Two orders of fish and chips" and then we were all confused, patrons and bar tender when we said we did want "peas". We didn't know what it was and the lady behind the bar couldn't understand why we didn't want them. It was great; I love cultural confusion! I told her our table number and after a short while the best beer battered fish and chips we've ever had arrived and we enjoyed it immensely. It was one of our touchstone moments of our brief time in Scotland. And the prices were very reasonable! Wishing you all the best from the States!

Visited the Tail O' The Bank at around 5pm on Sunday 30th of June. We had visited Greenock for the day and had been walking around town since around 9.30. Having worked up an appetite we ordered two roasts for £15, a Turkey roast and a Topside of Beef Roast. We also had a couple of pints each too, Tennents Lager and Dark Fruits cider. £4.40 for Tennents and £4.50 for the Dark Fruits. Both Roasts were excellent! And both were generous servings! Tasted great and couldn't be faulted in any way at all! The pints went down great too. We sat outside and ate, it wasn't overly warm and was comfortable. If you sit outside to eat just be wary of the gulls and don't leave your food or table unattended as I'm sure these opportunists would be off with whatever they can. The whole experience at Tail O' The Bank was excellent, staff were friendly and welcoming and I would highly recommend it to others.

Nice atmosphere and pub, but the food was horrible this time round... after a 35 minute wait we had asked for medium rare steaks with a grill and recieved the aftermath of a cremation... burger followed suit and was served stone cold and solid. Had absolutely 0 seasoning, tiniest squirt of sauce on the burgers and entire dish caked in barbeque sauce with no mention of this on the menu and onion rings missing, portion was good for money though... sad as it had next to no taste

Came here today after craving a pub meal and a lovely day driving around. (we are staying in Ayr) My husband used to live in Greenock so he recommended here. He's not been here in 6 + years.

Today we met Elaine, Thomas and Taylor, 3 very hard working and extremely polite and friendly staff. All 3 are a credit to the team and deserve recognition.

I had the garlic mushrooms on ciabatta as a started followed by the steak pie with peas and mash, exactly what I wanted and cooked perfectly, such tender and succulent meat too.

My husband had halloumi sticks and then the haddock and chips, both of which looked delicious and he enjoyed them very much.

We came with our son whom is disabled (ASD, non verbal and has an avoidant restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) which is an eating disorder, he never usually eats in public which is a struggle however we manage by bringing his safe foods with us.. today we decided to give him a go at public eating, we asked the staff if they would be able to make us something and they did! Our little boy was very happy! He also ate garlic bread which is a rare thing for him, 2 portions demolished.

We cannot thank the staff enough, thank you for making our day and hope to see you again as we'd like to return Friday before going home.

I'm in a wheelchair which is quite wide, all the doors are wide enough for my chair to fit, this doesn't often happen, also used the disabled and baby change toilets here, very clean and spacious and again I could fit into the room and transfer with ease. Lauren Sean...

Such a shame this place has really gone downhill quite recently. We frequently visit on a Saturday for breakfast and it's always been delicious food with good service. But a few weeks ago we were surprised to find the quality of the breakfasts was very poor. My wife received the wrong dish and after waiting a while for the right one to arrive we were presented with the original dish that had been "adjusted", which left us kind of speechless. We returned today, putting our last experience down to bad luck and hoping it was just a one off. Unfortunately we were proved wrong. Both our breakfasts were cooked very poorly (and I only had scrambled eggs on toast). They were very dry, bland and just tasted of nothing. Big lumps of whites in the scrambled eggs that looked like they had been nuked in the microwave. My wife's breakfast wrap was the same. We should have complained but to be honest after the last time we figured what's the point, it seems it's not just a one time mistake but part of a pattern. This is such a shame as we really enjoyed coming here, it's a nice place and the service is generally very nice, but recently there seems to have been a change and not for the better apparently. Maybe it's just whoever is "cooking" breakfast (the lunches always look appealing as they come out of the kitchen). Whatever it is I hope they sort it out but it will be a long time before we go back...

Best thing about it was probably the staff, they were all polite, friendly and working hard. Unfortunately the food was pretty naff. It being a hungry horse I wasn't expecting the best meal I've ever had, but the steak I got was one of the worst I've ever had. Thick with muscle and gristle, even the parts of it that were edible were incredibly hard to cut, tough and chewy. The chips weren't very nice either, and we found out there were no onion rings when we asked our server if they should have been with the steaks. She graciously replaced them with other sides, and did offer when it became obvious that the rest of my steak was inedible to get me a fresh one. However I believe at least one other diner had a similar issue, so what would be the point in starting over and probably getting something just as bad? Especially when you have a child with you who has a limited attention span/tolerance for sitting and waiting in a pub/restaurant. It's not the fault of the staff what they're given to work with, but if you know what you're doing in a kitchen you would have seen from raw what the steak was like, yet that didn't stop it from being cooked and served. So I had no confidence that it would have been worth the hassle of waiting for another while my family had finished eating. Was a real shame as I was looking forward to a decent,...
