The Brunswick Inn is one of the most outstanding real ale pubs in Derby, with no less than 16 hand pumped ales available. It is located just a three minute walk from Derby Midlands Station, but a little outside the city centre (10 minutes from Derby Bus Station e.g.). The pub has won many awards in previous years, and it's notable for it being split up into rooms of various sizes and shapes, ideal if you're with a small group and don't enjoy the rather noisy area around the bar. There's also a (modest) beer garden at the rear. Beers served include those made by its own house brewery.
The beers themselves are well-kept and fresh, which I've come to expect from a Cask Marque pub. The place can get noisy and very busy in the evening, and - to be blunt - some of the folks gathered there tend to be a little rough, if you know what I mean. I forgot a tablet there a year ago which never turned up - normally one would expect punters to hand in devices found on the premises, sadly this was not the case here.
So my impression of the crowd at The Brunswick might be a bit clouded - but it is certainly not as friendly and "family-like" a place as other real ale pubs in Derby, like The Flower Pot, The Five Lamps or The Exeter Arms.
The décor is rather low-key and traditional, but the smaller size of the rooms adjacent to the bar area do give it a cosy feeling.
Solely as a real ale pub it...

It's hard times for hospitality, particularly pubs so I don't like giving negative reviews, unfortunately I feel like I have little choice.
We visited on weekday afternoon with the intention of having a few pints and food; unfortunately the guy behind the bar seemed completely disinterested in serving us.
They have a substantial choice of beer, unfortunately this seemed to be a problem as we didn't order immediately and the bartender seemed somewhat annoyed by this.
Our first choice of beer had sold out, not a problem....I explained what I was after, to which the answer was "we've got nothing like that" no alternative suggestions, no "sorry we've got nothing like that, but you may like this" just a quick dismissive and slightly irritated dismissal.
It seems like a 'regulars' pub, which is fine; however, we live in Derby, we visit the pubs and bars in Derby, we could be potential 'regulars' and add to their weekly income.... instead we went home and ate; moreover, it's unlikely...

The days of venturing to the brunswick under the watchful eye of graham yates are long over, replaced by a man whos knowledge in real beer is heavily lacking as well as his attitude towards his customers and treatment of his staff, a young punk sort of boss. The beer that used to be on the premises used to be to die for, now it is foul tampered and i wouldn't be surprised if the staff personnel turned a blind eye towards making comments about the beer on the premises. If that is true, i feel sorry for them as i saw nothing but a young blonde girl behind the bar getting scolded all night by her boss for doing the most minuscule of mistakes. I don't know your name but you have served me with the utmost kindness on many occasions and if i see you in another pub i will happily offer you a pint
you have been warned about this place, if you don't believe me, adventure for a half then disappear to somewhere worth while once you know how bad...
