TLDR: To anyone close by, do not pass up The Viceroy!
I was on the lookout for a regular Indian after receiving a lamb madras as a specialty dish from elsewhere. Lamb is also commonly overcooked to a rubbery consistency at many Indian restaurants, wasting the poor lambs sacrifice to a heavy-handed unattentive chef and ending up as a less-than-satisfying eating experience.
Me and my wife were on our way to Anoki. We heard a dhol coming from inside and instantly turned away and started to head toward Shalimar Gold, which was a dissappointing prospect as I consider that run-of-the-mill despite the name having the word "Gold" in it. We passed The Viceroy and pondered whether or not to pop in. I'm really glad we did turned around and did.
We were asked upon arrival if we had booked a table. We hadn't and stated as much. However, we were quickly accommodated and seated. The poppadoms we ordered were freshly made and served as a nice appetiser to my starter and main, which I requested to be bought out at the same time as my wife hadn't ordered a starter.
My starter was Kakori Kebab which was described on the menu as a Royal Seekh Kebab, and it's not far off the mark. It was really tasty, served on a bed of salad and a side of raita, which all went down a treat.
For my main I'd ordered the Dum Handi Ghosht, which is a lamb dish. Wow. The flavours were equisite and the lamb just fell apart. I was really impressed at how beautifully cooked the meat was while maintaining a lovely texture and not overcooked like other Indian restaurants are in the business of doing. This was a beautiful example of how it should be cooked. The flavour was also pretty exquisite. This dish alone is what will keep me coming back here, so hats off to the chef, good sir/madam!
The decor was pretty nice, with pictures hung at elevated positions. I couldn't see most of these because of where they were, but the ambiance in the restaurant itself was good and not distracting, and it wasn't the typical red/burgundy you see at other Indian restaurants.
The staff overall were really polite, welcoming upon our arrival and attentive during our meal. Thank you for having us.
Overall I enjoyed the experience. If there was anything that did let it down was that there was always someone shouting the names of other staff during our meal, and we asked five different people for the bill before it eventually turned up, but that didn't add that much overall time onto our time there, perhaps ten minutes maximum. It would have been a five star review had it not been for these minor gripes.
I look forward to...
Read moreI ate here on a Tuesday evening. Even at around 5.45pm there were a few people already dining at the restaurant. We arrived and were greeted by the traditionally dressed member of staff who opened the door for us and we were swiftly seated without a wait.
Drinks were quickly served. And orders were taken. The waiter came over a couple of times and both times I asked for a couple more minutes, on the second tome heand he questioned what sort of food I liked; I told him I am not fussy just as long as it is not overly spicy. He suggested me to try the Rajastani Handi (lamb and mushroom) even though on the menu it said it was spicy he was quick to let me kbow that they can easily make it medium if I want. My friend ordered a vegetarian dish and was told that anything he doesn't see on the menu chef would still be happy to cook it.
The food arrived and it was beautifully presented (see pictures) and the taste was brilliant. Lamb was perfect size although mushrooms could have been slighly smaller in size. My dish was perfectly spiced, with a gentle sort of kick to it. Whilst the rice I ordered was pilau rice, and when it was brought to the table it was introduced as pilau rice I do not think it was- it was more fried rice but it was still nice.
We had a little break down in communication, my bill was brought to me when I asked for the dessert menu but I will put that down to the fact that many people perhaps skip desserts.

Read moreWe recently booked an end-of-year meal at Viceroy on Midland Road to celebrate two members of our staff leaving, and the experience was nothing short of exceptional. From the moment we walked in, the ambiance was inviting and perfect for our special occasion.
The team at Viceroy catered to a large group of 40 people, addressing a variety of dietary requirements, including vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options. They ensured everyone in our party had plenty of delicious choices. The food was not only diverse but also beautifully prepared and incredibly tasty. Each dish showcased fresh ingredients and was bursting with flavor.
The service was excellent throughout the evening. Eddie, the manager, and his team went above and beyond to make sure we were all well taken care of. Their attention to detail and commitment to customer satisfaction truly stood out. Despite the large group, they ensured that our glasses were always full, and each course was served promptly and with a smile.
Overall, Viceroy provided a memorable dining experience with great food, wonderful service, and a fantastic atmosphere. I highly recommend this restaurant for any special occasion or just a delightful meal out. It's clear that Eddie and his team take great pride in what they do, and it shows in every aspect of the dining...
