Visited on Monday for lunch. The first issue was that they had run out of baked potatoes and paninis. How is that even possible at 2pm when there's a medium sized supermarket 150 metres away? I ordered the greek salad (£12) which turned out to be side-salad sized (no bigger than a large cup), about 40% onion and chopped so finely it would hardly stay on the fork. To be fair, when someone came to check on us, albeit after we had finished eating, they did offer to remove it from the bill. My partner had the minute steak, which turned out ot be cold steak in a sandwich. Given that it took over 25 minutes to deliver these dishes, we expected better. Being an old church, the atmosphre is a bit weird; there are rather too many reminders of death around for my taste, and it's a bit noisy even without may diners. I've long thought that what Moniefieth needs is a really good cafe. It still does.
Update: I note the owner has provided a mildly passive-agressive response to my review (not a good sign) claiming that I finished my meal. This is incorrect; I left a large proportion of the onion, which it's self was a large proportion of the dish. Had someone visited our table to check on progress before I had 'finished', I would have been able to highlight the issue. I didn't mention it before but when I did express my dissatisfaction with the salad I was told that " That's disappointing. Everybody else gives us good feedback about it". In other words, it's my fault 🙄. Passive aggressive, much!
I'm not sure what kind of oven takes two hours to bake a potato: I would have thought a church candle could do it quicker than that.
As for 'going to the supermarket' being a security risk... I'm pretty much lost for a reasonable response to that one. As the owner says though, clearly not the place for me and I wish them the best of luck with their enterprise, and their efforts to make it to Tesco without being ram-raided by marauding gangs of...
Read moreAbsolutely stunning adaptation/conversion job on the church, with sensitive preservation of original features and new decor working very well. The piano in the centre and art by local artists is a bonus.
Starting with food, first the good: the cakes we had were very good indeed. Not uniformly outstanding perhaps but up to the standard of the decor overall. The savouries on the other hand were sadly disappointing. Not strictly speaking bad, but passably mediocre. Greek salad served not only not dressed but without a sign of olive oil or oregano anywhere near (oil, tho not extra virgin, was provided on request but that a request was needed was disappointing). Baked potato, again, passable, but only just, and the filling of "coronation chicken", again, not quite bad but very underwhelming with dressing consisting of simply mayonnaise and an average curry powder.
Service was friendly and polite but food took ages to appear despite not being very busy and some of the order was missed first time and never turned up in "correction". We did get a bill reduction tho which is appreciated.
So in summary: it's a beautiful location with good cakes, but definitely needs to lift its savoury game and iron out service standards. The potential is...
