We had a meal at the Peterville Inn yesterday evening and were thoroughly disappointed by the experience. The restaurant was very busy but we were welcomed warmly. However the wait for our starters and mains was over an hour, the main course was overcooked (cod) and by this time we had both lost our appetites. We were seated next to a couple with a baby who had been waiting even longer than us and she had become fractious. Not the parent’s fault, but it lent nothing to the dining experience. Although the waiting staff were profuse in their apologies to both parties, and our drinks were taken off our bill as an acknowledgment that the whole episode was not up to scratch, I think the management need to think long and hard about what they are offering if they want to continue to attract not only regular customers but the constant stream of tourist who visit the area. I note that there are lots of good reports too on Google reviews but, as dining out is an expensive business, this should not be a lottery. So, for what it’s worth, I hope this review as a response to the excuses given to us will be read and considered: firstly if the pub has a very small kitchen, time to expand it to cope with very busy times which are a regular occurrence in Cornwall from Easter until September. Secondly, if there is a trainee in the kitchen, he or she should be adequately supported. This means managers rolling up their sleeves and helping in the kitchen, doing whatever is necessary e.g. peeling spuds, washing dishes…etc. to ensure the whole kitchen is functioning as best it can under pressure. Thirdly, if you know there’s going to be a long wait, tell your customers, apologise at the beginning and offer recompense immediately. Coming shame-faced at the end with an apology is not a good or professional service. I think most people understand things can go wrong, but grant them the consideration of telling them what’s going on straight away! I felt sorry for the waiting staff who were lovely and were the ones who had to face the customers when really the management need to take a good hard look at themselves and what they are ‘offering’. Also, coming myself from a hospitality background, spare a thought (and I do) for the kitchen and the blood, sweat and tears they gave last night and will continue to give. It was supposed to have been a delicious dinner but left a bad taste in the mouth. The pub’s claim of being ‘England’s Best Pub 2024’ was very far wide of the...
Read moreStopped for lunch as they advertise dietary requirements provided for. We were told that one of the fryers was out of action so no side orders of fries available. Ordered anchovies as a starter...delicious. Ordered a mixed fish/seafood main which came with sourdough. They offered gluten free bread instead, but after ordering came back and said they had none. As it wasn't a full meal we were left with no option but to compromise and have some normal chips. There were numerous plates with chips coming from the kitchen but they were not particularly busy. The waiter asked the chef, but he said no as the fryer they had was not guaranteed gluten free. We told the waiter this would not be an issue as there was no allergy just an intolerance to larger amounts of gluten. He returned with a point blank refusal as the chips were not part of the meal. No discretion, no accounting for their lack of dietary alternative provision. Left hungry and charged full price for a meal which had no bread. What we had was lovely and waiter and waitress did their best. Please don't advertise that you cater for dietry requirements when you don't and...
Read moreI'm sorry to say this because I was really looking forward to my visit but it was disappointing. The service was attentive, and the guys on shift really did a great job, but the food was a real letdown. The presentation of the roast was great, but it really lacked flavour. My beef was grey, maybe due to the maturing or cooking process, but it didn't add to the flavour. It was sadly bland and unappealing. The vegetables were average. Roast potatoes are terrible, not crispy or fluffy, and may have been cooked the previous day. The Yorkshire certainly had as it was stale and inedible. The dish only luke warm. Cauliflower cheese was good, but sadly, it was not enough to make up for the rest. Its a shame as this place does have a great reputation. Maybe we just caught them on a bad day. Pictures below look great my thoughts are style over substance. To finish on a positive though, the starters...
