Golden Plaice — Restaurant in Hertsmere

Outstanding chips. An owner that cares about quality and consistency. My hubby and I have been coming here for years and only once or twice has it been less than perfection. Crispy, fresh fish and consistently good chips.

What happened here? Once upon a time this was easily one of the best chippies in London. Hence a previous 5 star rating, I can’t believe the drop in standards. Is it under new management? First of all the fish sizes have shrunk, you order large fish and you get small or medium. Secondly the chips have gone all weird, very dry texture. They also taste weird! So disappointing! How the mighty have fallen. Don’t know if it’s a blip or the long standing owner is away but I’m gutted!!!

Edit June 2024 Tried it during the week after having a delicious meal at the weekend, fish was fresh, crispy batter, chops first class. Then we bravely went for another treat. We were dismayed to get awful fish, not fresh. Scampi small. only the chips were edible. We've been going for years and travel some distance to get here, this time decided it's time to call it a day! Big shame but it's meant to be a nice treat and it's not worth the calories or pounds.

When they're top of their game - no other chip shop comes close. We travel a few miles to get their chips and the taste and freshness is unrivalled. Yes we've had a couple of disappointing meals, but they respond well to feedback and in a world of disappointing meals - they're the best fast food place in our opinion. We try not to go too often as we're health conscious but sometimes we give in and treat ourselves! :)) Only giving 4 star because it's variable so an that;s an average.

We arrived at 1900hrs to find only Gammon,Turkey and roast beef available. Before being seated we heard other customers complain of how undercooked the beef was. I had the beef, it was inedible... Very rare and tough. The guy serving was saying to anyone that would listen how bad the meat had been cooked. When the member of staff came to us to ask how we found our meal, I said how bad I found the meal. I have never before complained about a meal before this. She didn't seem that concerned. The shouting and laughter we heard coming from the kitchen was more akin to a Kindergarten than a kitchen. To top everything, the "traditional Toby gravy" was more like a thick stew. I almost got a kebab from next door but so glad that I didn't. I could see even through the window that the chips were excellent quality. I went inside and decided to sit down, which was a good choice because it turns out this is a really good chippy. There is a wide choice of fish on the menu. I chose a small cod (which was actually quite big) with chips and peas. The fish was fresh and cooked beautifully - perfectly crisp batter and flaky white goodness.
