I dined last night at the Old Black Horse. The restaurant is situated in the heart of Market Bosworth. Ideal stop to have dinner after a nice walk in the countryside. Dinner was pleasant and service courteous and kind. Food was fresh and presented decently. I will start from this and then review service and atmosphere.
Ingredients were fresh and combined prperluy. I saw this in the two courses I ordered;pan fried scallops and pan fried stone bass. Scallops were cooked properly and accompanied by little veggies (salad chopped, pepper, carrots and two crisps). Scallops were almost finely cooked although they could've been improved by adding a bit of light butter when being cooked and left slightly rare. This would have enhanced the flavour. I found the stone bass a formidable course. I particular, i enjoyed the assortment of grains and pomegranate with a scent of orange. The bed of grains, where the sea bass fillet was laid on, really intensified the flavour of the course. The greens at the top contributed to the delicacy of the dish. A glass of Pinot grigio white was a perfect match with both courses.
Service was caring and kind. A young lady kindly asked us if we liked the food and if the dinner was enjoyable. I felt looked after.
Lastly, the interiors and spaces are well arranged: you can choose to dine indoors or outdoors. A small garden is ideal to have dinner on a warm summer evening. The indoors are pleasant too and, even if dining areas are a bit small, white decor is elegant and makes the space cosy.
I enjoyed dining here. I...
Read moreI came for dinner on the 20th of August for my sister's birthday, with a table of ten. Firstly I'd like to say the food was superb, well worth the money. But sadly our experience fell short there after. The old black horse inn has built a reputation locally as a fine dining establishment. As good as the food was, everything else was lacking. Firstly my parents have been in the drinks industry for 40+ years, and know there trade. So when it came to ordering drinks, there looked at the menu, and to there surprise it was woeful. My father asked the waitress what sherry they had, he asked for a Fino, a dry sherry. The young women didn't have a clue what a fino was, and responded by saying we've got Harvey's cream sherry. To my father's surprise, the waitress then, said they have a fino in the cellar, he was served a Harvey's, not what he wanted.
I'll be honest and say there beer range was not representative of a fine dining establishment nor the wine selection. Everything on there menu I could get through my local tesco, or majestic wines. Nothing exciting.
I also think, the staff needs some serious training. When asked no one knew what specials were on that Saturday evening, no one knew, about the wines when asked.
I hope the management see this and...
Read moreWent yesterday for lunch based on last year s excellent platters meal. We orders platters again. This years were awful. Festive platter consisted of a bowl of roast potatoes with a few bits of other items sprinkled on top. Turkey was one small slice chopped as finely as possible so could not be found. Last year some nice slices provided. Hot meal served with cold plates. Pigs in blankets cold, cheapest sausage and undercooked. Brussel sprouts cold and unrecogniseable in flavour. There was nothing good about this platter. Fish pLatter OK.
Asked to complain to the chef but told he was too busy. Presented with bill which failed to take off the £50 deposit, another complaint. Five of us left totally disappointed and hungry vowing never to return. Returned home and phoned manager to complain. No compensation or apology offered.
Other thoughts, table not ready on arrival, food took 45 minutes to arrive and was left to go cold before serving. The padding on all chairs collapsed making them very uncomfortable. Drinks only served after reminder twice.
How far down can The Black Horse sink from its previous excellent reputation? The introduction of the mandatory deposit of £10 person is totally off putting also.
