First visit. Arrived late in the day. Staff were welcoming and polite. However after this, things went downhill with regards the 'food'. I don't believe it is necessarily the kitchens fault, rather it is a problem for all chain pubs and restaurants. The risotto for example, was seriously undercooked with the rice gritty and undercooked. This was in fairness removed from the bill. The jacket potato was old and you could see was very dry, with the gammon very tough at one end and more tender at the other. The Cesar salad for over £11 was very 'light' no bacon or similar, and the Mac and cheese appeared reheated. This is the problem, food taken out of packets and either microwaved or heated in an oven then popped on a plate. The building itself is beautiful and as mentioned the staff are helpful, but for the prices charged the food is very disappointing.

Stayed here for another week with work. The hotel is in a very old building, which should be taken into consideration. The rooms are dated. Peeling wallpaper, tiles hanging off, old fixtures etc. The carpets are threadbare, and floors are very uneven and very creaky. Having said that, it does a job and the beds are very soft and comfortable, rooms are cleaned daily with good towels etc. Not eaten in the evening restaurant, as I tried other places in town, but the breakfasts are great, and the person serving breakfast couldn’t be better. Very polite and efficient. For a cheap stay over, it’s absolutely fine. Would I recommend it as a destination for a holiday? Probably not. The location couldn’t be better though, right in the centre of the town, and with a big free (for guests) car park. I’ll be back, as it ticks plenty of boxes for a work stay.

Stayed for 4 nights and found the george hotel to be one of the best pub/hotel I've stayed in. The room I had was larger than most and very clean but also had most of its original features. The bathroom was a decent size with a bath and shower, although I only just could fit in the shower because it had a low ceiling. The room was cleaned everyday and tea and coffee replenished. We had breakfast every morning which was delicious and always a good selection, from fruit to cereals to a hot breakfast with lots of choice. We also had a evening meal every night and cannot fault the chefs cooking. Everything was served piping hot and delicious with a decent sized menu to choose from. All the staff at the george are fabulous polite and nothing is too much trouble. I would definitely stay here again. Well done George hotel 👏

Terrible stay totally unprofessional and lack of customer service skills and rude attitude. Room and bathroom need updating bed comfy but room was like an oven all night even though no heating on window open and fan on all night so couldn't sleep. Shower like a trickle and lukewarm even though signs everywhere warning hot water lead not long enough on hairdryer to reach socket. Worst bit was breakfast though breakfast advertised in bedrss available until noon however it actually finishes at 10am we were in the breakfast room before, 10 however we were rudely informed that there was no table set up for us and had to wait we were given a used table that wasn't cleared away properly dirty table cloth and dirty side plate cup and saucers had to remind waitress to bring fresh cutlery I was rudely informed that I could use the cutlery from the next table so had to get it myself no bread out couldn't have a hot drink because cup was filthy was then told that unless we ordered straight away we would be refused breakfast when I asked why I was informed that breakfast finishes at 10 am so I explained that the paperwork in the bedroom states breakfast was available until noon she was very rude and clearly did not believe me and said no it's 10am and if we did not order now we would not get anything I was appalled and stunned by her attitude and blatent rudeness no apologies were given for the incorrect information or the inconvenience yet the manager and another member of staff were sat eating breakfast in the same room along with other guests whom were still being served hot breakfasts I felt this was totally unprofessional we ordered breakfast asked for our poached eggs runny and they came hard as bullets the breakfast overall was very average and to top it all she cleared away all the breakfast things and the hot drinks and never even checked if we had finished. There is a wetherspoons just across the road I would stay there you will get better food better room and much better service. Totally appalled and will be taking it up with the head office of the group chain garden inns. Left us reeling this morning how unprofessionalism and rudeness and no apology for their error totally rude will not be recommending...

A lovely historic feel to the hotel and overall a pleasant stay with friendly staff (mostly). The room was spacious and comfortable. The only issue was the shower control, we could have hot or cold or both intermittently. The big disappointment was the bar. Greene King made their name as a brewery so we were looking forward to a nice pint of Abbot Ale only to find they don't serve it because they don't sell enough to justify wasting half a barrel every few days. Why not have a smaller barrel? Then there was an issue with the IPA so that was off. Come on! For a brewery to not have any of its real ales available! The other main criticism was that there seemed to be a bit of confusion over our booking; whilst some staff knew we had booked dinner, bed and breakfast, others didn't seem to, resulting in (a) the one surly waitress we encountered informing us rather brusquely at 9.20 p.m., after taking ages to serve us, we were too late to order dessert thus requiring a complaint being raised and our paid-for desserts being served, and (b) we were going to be charged again for our food until we pointed out that we had paid as part of the booking. Don't get me wrong, I would stay here again because these problems were not earth shattering but you would expect an operation like Greene King to get the basics right and make your stay...

4 adults and a baby drinks to start and all going well. In for another drink and order the main meals. Not many people in hopefully dinner will no be long as we have chosen two roasts and two burgers chicken salad child's meal. 45 minutes just about check and see what has happened to ouer dinner and along it comes. What a wait for simple basic food , loose one star. Ooops no child's meal that's another star gone. Roast just under £10.00 each lots of beef, Yorkshire greasy, mash strange taste, gravy very thick skin vegetable OK vegetarian roast very with cauliflower pie/bake not very fresh or nice. Burgers not the greatest and value for money pretty poor. Sorry that's one more star lost, the promise was all there unfortunately it was all very under whelming not even any salad with the burger just fries and a pot of spicy sauce. The only redeeming factor was the nice friendly staff and the new decorations inside keeping just two stars. Not sure we will be acting at the George Hotel unless there are some drastic...
