Found this little place after being recommended by a friend, so thought I'd check it out.
After walking in I was met with a chill vibe, with good music and lighting that gives the restaurant a relaxed but an atmosphere full of life.
The setting is adorned with pictures and decorations authentic of Jamaica.
I was soon greeted by an energetic server, who instantly made me feel welcome, and quickly took my order of an authentic Kingston 62 Jamaican rum and coke. Which I highly.
I ordered myself some Jerk Chicken with rice and peas, food came quickly, as I took a bite of the chicken I was met with moist deliciousness, with a marvelous spice and flavor, the rice and peas an equally splendid accompaniment to the chicken.
The portion was good, and filled me up. The person with me got some curry goat and dumplings with rice. I had some myself and the curry goat was a mouth-watering, delectable treat, melt in the mouth with a packs a punch flavor, I'd definitely get a full portion next time.
Staff were attentive and on the night I went pretty lively, got into some good conversation with another customer. The vibe in this place makes it an underrated gem, while the food is no less than delightful. I hope to try the patties next time I visit, always loved them, but they're so popular they'd run out by the time I got there.
Highly recommend for the hungry local or weary traveller visiting Ipswich for authentic...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI'm an Ipswich boy who now lives abroad and I've had Jamaica Street on my radar for a trip back for quite a few years now. I was worried that I'd built up expectations too much, but I can honestly say my first order from the restaurant was the best meal I've eaten in my old home town! I dropped in to order a big box meal (Ā£15, worth the extra fiver for another main and side) and went with curried goat, jerk chicken, rice and peas, Mac and cheese, and fried plantain. If you're picking up, allow a bit of time because they're cooking to order. The place itself is a bit messy and could do with a tidy up, but that hardly matters when it comes to the food. The goat was soft and tender and just dripping off the bone, and the chicken was heavily marinated and had a good bit of bbq char. Bit of heat to both but not enough to burn anyone's mouth off. The rice and peas and mac and cheese were hearty and warming accompaniments. The smoky sweetness of the plantain compliments the mains well. It isn't fancy, but I'd rather eat this than dine in some poncy high end restaurant any day of the week! Comfort food at it's finest, tastes like it has been cooked with love. The portions are also very generous. I can't recommend the food enough, Jamaica Street will be my first port of call next time I'm...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreEDIT: The order was in my partners name, Martin. We ordered on Thursday 21st of October at 6:15pm. I won't include more details on a public review. We also DID speak to a member of staff when the food hadn't arrived, only to be advised it would be later than planned with no explanation or apology. We spoke to someone again and was advise it had (finally) left the restaurant, but again without any explanation for the delay or apology. Perhaps a simple apology would go further than arguing back to customers and implying that we had not ordered or hadn't tried to contact you at the time.
We ordered at 6:15pm, delivery was due for 7:15pm, quite a long wait for a Thursday but no problem. We then get a text that the order is delayed and will be with us at 7:40pm - 8pm. Quite a delay again, we try to cancel but doesn't allow it.. ok.. continue waiting.. 8pm no sign of delivery, text the restaurant (this was all via Just Eat) and they said another delay, food has just left the restaurant and will be with us at 8:25pm. I'm poorly and wanted something quick and easy so I could eat and get an early night.. we're now over a TWO HOUR WAIT!!
Once it finally arrived the food was tasty, but very dry....
