Maharani Indian and Bangladeshi Cuisine — Restaurant in Ipswich

I thought I’d give this a try as it had some good reviews.

With the whole place to choose from, we were seated out of the way in a tight alcove so that no one could see us and we couldn’t see much either.

I was a bit concerned that when we turned up we were the only ones there, which is never a good sign.

We ordered a mixed started, which came out in good time and was, by all standards, very nice. Everything was tasty and seemed freshly cooked.

We ordered coke, which turned out to be from a pre opened plastic bottle, and just looking at it you could see it had no bubbles and was flat and tasteless, I’m not one to waste food or drink if can be helped so I drank it none the less.

After we finished the starters and drink, we ordered more coke, again it turned flat and tasteless, which In thought was taking the mickey a bit so I mentioned it, and was told it came out of a newly opened bottle, (It clearly had not)!,

He said he would open another one if I liked, (You can tell when pouring a fizzy drink if it’s flat, he did this FOUR times, there’s no mistake there, nor any respect or custom)!!

But I said I’ll drink this because I don’t want to waste it. I never ordered any more drinks after that and it was never brought up by them, although they did come over to ask if everything was ok, but it was only really to see how I was getting on eating the Phall I ordered, because clearly everything was not ok.

Apart from the drinks, the Phall was not very spicy at all, barely above a Madras for heat, and it had no real flavour to it, it just tasted of powder more than anything, and most of the chicken was a bit chewy, which was also the same with the lamb dish the other person ordered.

When it came to paying the bill, it seemed like they were having a discussion whether to comp the drinks or not, turns out it was NOT that won, and as I said, nothing was mentioned about this or the food, if I could give a minus score for lack of Customer Service I would have done.

This is one place I’ll not be returning to, and I felt embarrassed at bringing a guest with me to experience the food and service on my watch, so to speak.

So it turned out that there was a good reason we were the only ones there!

I’ve been using this restaurant for a few years now, but only for takeaways—which have always been excellent. My wife and I have been saying for a while that we must go and have a sit-down meal at the restaurant, and I can honestly say it was one of the best curries we’ve ever had. We had booked a table, and upon arrival, we were seated straight away. Within two minutes, we were given a drinks menu, and shortly after, a very attentive waiter came to take our order. We took our time choosing and never felt rushed. Our drinks arrived promptly, along with some poppadom’s that were fresh, crispy, and not greasy at all. Once we finished our poppadom’s, our meals arrived—and wow, what a meal it was. I had the Bengal Special Handi Tikka Bhuna, which was packed with flavour and had just the right level of spice and heat for my taste buds. I’ve had curries from all over the world and, thankfully, never a terrible one—though some were better than others. This one, however, was a cut above the rest. The chicken was incredibly tasty and clearly high quality. All in all, it was an excellent experience. I don't generally leave reviews but as I've no intention of returning here goes, a customer of 20 years and recently the quality and standards have plummetted. This is my third recent visit as I was allowing for the odd blip but no, i've come to the conclusion the Maharini is now done and is riding on its previous reputation. Incorrect items in the order (now twice of three orders), tasteless and greasy, allegedly medium but was bland with no trace of any spice, as mentioned this was my third visit in recent months and each time have been disappointed.
