Review for The Rose and Crown

I had a booking for 4 on a Sunday at The Rose and Crown, attending with my partner and our grandparents. We arrived for our 4 pm reservation and were seated in a dingy corner of the pub without being informed that we needed to order drinks at the bar. We eventually figured this out ourselves and got a few drinks, which was the only smooth part of our experience.

Our starters, consisting of two soups and some garlic mushrooms, took over 45 minutes to arrive. While the mushrooms were great, the soup was disappointingly slushy.

When it came to ordering our mains, we were advised that multiple items, including pies and any chips, were off the menu. We were told the available meats for the roast were lamb, beef, and pork. My partner opted for the lamb and beef but was told the lamb came on the bone and the beef would cost extra, pushing the price of the Sunday roast to around £20.

Our mains arrived an hour and a half later, after we had to inquire about them since we had commitments to leave by 6 pm. My partner's Sunday roast consisted of just gravy, a Yorkshire pudding, a lamb shank, hardly any vegetables, and one roast potato — all for nearly £20, which is robbery. My grandmother’s braising steak was just a few pieces of beef.

Frustrated, we decided we had enough and requested to leave, offering to pay only for our starters and drinks as we had not received all of our mains and the ones we did were terrible. The manager rudely demanded nearly £90, but after much back-and-forth, we ultimately only paid for our starters.

During this, we could hear the staff discussing how they could force us to pay. As we were leaving, they stated we were barred, but thankfully we won’t be going back even if we had the choice. After talking to friends, we've learned they’ve had similar experiences with the staff.

The overall experience was abysmal. The establishment is run down and charges top prices for subpar food and service. The manager avoided talking to us directly, and there were no check-ins throughout our meal.

AVOID THIS PLACE. They only care about taking your money without providing the quality or service to justify the prices. The owner will probably try to respond to this review to prove us wrong, but review readers, please take my advice and don’t come here. You’d have a better experience at the Wetherspoons...

Usually the food and service here is great, but unfortunately today it wasn't up to standard. The positives are that the staff are friendly, the prices are quite cheap and there's a nice selection of real ale at the bar. The negatives are that when we sat down for our meal and looked over a menu, we were told there would be a wait as there was a large party - perfectly fine - but then when our order was finally taken the server told us that there were no giant Yorkshire puddings, no pies, no liver, etc etc etc basically 80% of the menu wasn't available. I wish they had told us before we'd spent 20mins deciding what we were having. The food itself was not great, my regular sized Yorkshire puddings were partially burnt, the veg was over cooked. It's a shame as I had high hopes for food here on a Sunday tea time. I know that the menu issues aren't the fault of the staff, it's probably issues with supply and demand etc but it still isn't great. I'll edit my review when I go back next and hopefully have a...

Be warned. You need to visit this fantastic pub when you're extremely hungry. This pub was recommended to me by multiple people so we just had to try for ourselves. Talk about exceeding all expectations! Lovely warm welcome from Richard today and shown to our table. Very homely feel to the place with a relaxed atmosphere. Ordered our food and when starters arrived I was immediately worried (in a fun way) they were huge! and very tasty. Then came the mains...... Absolutely fantastic! But could any of us finish our meals....... Nope! As amazing as the meals were we Richard boxed the rest up for us to take home. Seriously everything was spot on to the point we've actually cancelled future bookings elsewhere to come back here and also for a special birthday. Has a good sized function room for private parties too if required which looked really good! Definitely give the Rose and Crown a try. You'll...

We were looking for a traditional English pub, with good food and friendly atmosphere. The Rose & Crown delivered on them all! They have a great selection of cask ales, which frequently rotate. The food menu is extensive and we all loved them. We’re going back, no question.

Absolutely amazing!!! Staff and chef were fantastic!! The meal was huge and quality for the price. Will definitely be going back. I've been to all the carverys locally and they were rubbish compared to the Sunday dinners we ate today at The Rose and Crown
