This place is almost unbelievably good!
Coffee: The first flat white I had in here I thought maybe it was a one off or I was really coffee-deprived. But the 2nd and 3rd were just as good. Consistently fantastic coffee. You can ask for it extra hot and actually get it extra hot as opposed to the extra degree or two you get at the chains. Everyone in my department says the same thing. The coffee they use is very high quality, they obviously clean the machine really well, the milk balance is great and they know how to put a little but not a lot of froth on the flat white.
Food: My mind boggles at why anyone would go and get a pre-made, mass-produced sandwich at Costa over the square when you can get a fantastic home-made sandwich at this place. I had the smashed falafel today - legendary.
People and atmosphere.:The people who work here are constantly nice, kind and happy. They work hard and efficiently, and despite the fact that there's usually a queue (testament to the quality of the food/drinks), it moves quickly. The tables are well spaced, and the acoustics aren't bad.
Condiments: What a lovely idea to have them all on the side and let you help yourself. I'm going to bring my kids in here for the ice cream as soon as I can, because they are going to love this place!
Wishlist: Sometimes I like to order a salad (less bread). I'd love to see a simple salad on the menu, with any of the sandwich fillings on the side. Something like maybe chopped cabbage and other veggies that they could easily put together. I'm slightly worried this would be so popular the line will go all the way up to County College. If I could buy shares in this place I would. I LOVE IT.
Epilogue: We've all noticed and regretted, I am sure, that some parts of campus are looking a bit unloved in the last few years, a bit tatty. This amazing little coffee shop/restaurant 100% goes the other way. Not only have you got gourmet, world-class coffee and food, but It's really nicely situated, next to the successfully landscaped bit of the spine and with some tables overlooking Alex Square, and it makes you feel happy to be on campus (the way I used to feel about 10 years ago....) Honestly, if I were the powers-to-be, I'd start looking for larger premises to give...
Read moreCoastal and Co. is one of my favourite spots on campus, maybe even in Lancaster! We have been going since it was in the small unit on Alexandra Square and was very excited when we heard that it was moving to a larger premises on campus (still by Alex Square). The hot chocolates are my particular favourite, but the baked goods are amazing (I would highly recommend their almond croissant), and to top it off the staff are really lovely. I visit every Friday morning with my friends for a hot chocolate and breakfast and I always look forward to our weekly Coastal trip! Overall, I would HIGHLY recommend a visit to Coastal if you are on Lancaster University Campus or are just in the area and are looking for a new place to grab a drink and watch the world go by. Read moreFirst, why go to the Costa coffee for a ham and cheese sandwich from the fridge when you have a freshly made, 4.5£ with crisps deliciously toasted one here? Add in a delicious ice cream, mine was raspberry White chocolate (with nice chunk of white chocolate) and cookies. .
The shop expanded since the first time. And it is for the better, the atmosphere is very comfy and chill, you can't ask for better when you need somewhere for a coffee/ tea break! Being situated in a central location of the university, you can't miss it. For summer I highly recommend the ice cream. Although the ice tea is a bit too sugary (mix it a bit, and it will be nice) the hot tea is the best ! I haven't tried the other food yet but there are a lot of choices! Ranging from sweet snacks to sandwiches...
