I recently visited Murgatroyds Fish & Chips, and from start to finish it was an absolute delight.
I ordered the classic fish and chips, and I have to say it was one of the best I’ve had in a long time. The chips were perfectly cooked – fluffy inside with just the right amount of crisp on the outside. The fish itself was fresh, flaky, and wrapped in a beautifully golden, crispy batter that struck the perfect balance between light and indulgent. It was served with a choice of bread and butter (white or brown), a thoughtful touch that added to the traditional feel of the meal.
The kids went for the chicken nuggets and chips meal, which not only hit the mark in terms of taste but also came with two scoops of ice cream for dessert – an incredible value that left them smiling from ear to ear.
We also tried the fish cake and chips, and this really stood out. It was nothing like the typical fish cakes we’re used to. Instead of being mostly mashed potato with just a hint of fish, this was crafted from actual chunks of fish sandwiched between slices of potato, then battered and fried to perfection. The quality shone through in every bite – it was hearty, authentic, and absolutely delicious.
Service was equally impressive. Betty, who looked after us, was warm, polite, and attentive throughout. Her friendliness and professionalism elevated the entire experience – it felt like we were genuinely cared for, not just served.
The atmosphere deserves a mention too. The restaurant was spotless, clearly well looked after, and the décor instantly transported me back to my childhood. There’s a comforting nostalgia about it – it’s traditional in the best way possible. My advice: don’t ever change it!
All in all, Murgatroyds delivered on every front – food, service, cleanliness, and atmosphere. It’s the kind of place that makes you want to return not just for the food, but for the...
Read moreWe nipped in to Murgatroyds for a Friday evening meal en route back from the airport. Understandably this place has a massive reputation and was incredibly busy (as they should be on a Friday night!)
Parking was fairly straightforward but we arrived at about 5pm so a bit before the evening rush. Tables were packed but we were seated relatively quickly
Going inside is a little like stepping back in time 30 years but in the best way possible, it’s really quite charmingly traditional in decor and I quite like that the style has been maintained so well after all this time.
I ordered a small fish and chips while my husband had scampi and fish and chips.
Portion sizes were exceptionally generous and even though I ordered a “small”, I couldn’t finish mine! The menu has everything you’d expect from a traditional fish and chip restaurant and quite a bit more, and it was great to see special offers for senior citizens. That being said, it is definitely not a cheap meal out. While I think their reputation justifies a bit of a premium, it was rather more expensive than I had expected.
My meal was good, but my fish was a little dry which was disappointing given the price. The batter was lovely and light and crisp however. My husband’s scampi was really nice and I think I’d order that instead next time. I wish I had saved room to try one of the desserts as we saw some fantastic retro looking sweets coming out for other tables!
We will probably visit again if we are...
Read moreDon't come here. Don't eat here. Don't even drive past. You'll not enjoy fish and chips elsewhere again.
Visited here because was in Bradford ove the bank holiday weekend.
Very busy in both the restaurant and takeout section. (We took out, but ate at one of the benches outside)
Ordered the standard fish and chips but fried in oil rather than the beef dripping typically used, due to religious reasons. (Have had the beef dripping version before I knew what it even that's what they fried in. It's even better than the fried in oil fish and chips). The fish was cooked to absolute perfection. Gorgeous piece of fish which was meaty and held it's structure well but flaked perfectly. The batter was nice and crunchy without the soggy innards which you get from usual fish and chips shops. It wasn't greasy at all and both myself and my friend actually ate the batter. We normally remove it and eat just the plain fish inside.
The chips weren't the absolute best I've had, but they were very good. Individual chips rather than a lump of stodge all stuck together.
Overall very happy with the food. The price was not bad considering the quality and also the quantity. The drinks seemed a little pricey. Over a pound for a can of dandelion and burdock.
Had a fish and chips from a local fish and chips restaurant a week later(not the typical takeaway) and was left very very disappointed.
Thanks a lot Murgatroyds. You've ruined almost every fish and chips...
