"A Culinary Voyage at Murgatroyds" A recent visit to Murgatroyds for a birthday celebration turned out to be more than just a meal; it was an unparalleled culinary experience. The ambiance radiated warmth, just the right setting for a memorable meal with loved ones. The highlight of the evening was undoubtedly the "Big Un". This dish wasn’t just generous in size but equally abundant in flavor. The fish was ensconced in a perfectly golden batter, crisp to the last bite. Accompanied by traditionally cooked chips, delightful mushy peas, and a slice of bread, it was the epitome of classic British comfort food. The unexpected pairing of a cup of coffee, rather than the typical tea, offered a refreshing twist, adding a rich depth to the meal's conclusion. Priced at £22, it presented exceptional value for such an indulgent treat. For those dining with children, Murgatroyds impresses yet again. The kids' meals are thoughtfully curated, striking a balance between taste and value, ensuring younger diners are equally satisfied. In essence, Murgatroyds is not just a fish and chip restaurant; it's a testament to time-honored culinary traditions served with a touch of innovation. If you cherish quality food and genuine hospitality, this establishment should be on your must-visit list.

Fish absolutely perfect as always, I love the batter on the Big Un! It's always the perfect thickness with delicious crispy waves encasing the monster thick fillet of white flaky haddock (none of this cod nonsense in a real Yorkshire chip-oyl as we Leeds folk up north would say). The beef dripping cooking method is a taste that cannot be bettered, vegetable oil fryers just can't cut it with a true fish n chips aficionado in my opinion. My vegetarian partner enjoyed the veggie chilli too which is her dish of choice whenever we come here, the portion sizes are generous every time, and she assures me it's consistently the same. There is an overwhelming amount of choices for a dessert too if you're not defeated by the starter and main course offer on the menu, the sherry trifle is my usual guilty pleasure it really reminds me of my mum and Sunday teatime picky tea everyone in the 1970s seemed to have done. I can taste the salad cream and celery sticks now! I digress, if you're a fan of the old school Harry Ramsdens in the early 1990s then you're absolutely guaranteed to be satisfied here. The best fish n chips in the north east areas of England no contest.

I currently reside in the USA, and recently visited my home country of England. I have been craving authentic fish and chips. For my first trip back to the UK in 12 months, I had high expectations after seeing Murgatroyds online. During my stay in Cheshire, I made the 1 hour 20 trip to the restaurant. I was thrilled with my experience! The restaurant met all my expectations. The fish was cooked to perfection with a light, crispy batter. The chips were delicious (though my wife thought they were slightly overdone), and the mushy peas were just right. My wife ordered curry sauce and declared it the best chip shop curry sauce she had ever tasted! To round off the meal, we indulged in a nostalgic dessert, and the jam roly-poly did not disappoint! The restaurant was well-managed and ran like clockwork. I was very impressed. The only downside was the small table; I would have much preferred a booth for a more comfortable dining experience.

Murgatroyds epitomises a place that takes genuine pride in the food it serves. “Fish and chips” sounds so basic, but here the details and the quality of the food put it head and shoulders above not only other F&C restaurants but all eateries. Things I love: the quality of the fish is FLAWLESS every time. They have a great gluten free and vegetarian menu. The portion sizes are very generous and superbly presented. Service is always spot on. I get excited to eat here and everyone I’ve taken along feels the same. So much so that I’m having difficulty balancing my positivity with anything less complimentary. The only things I can comment on that don’t float my boat - I’m not a fan of the teapots or the sauce bottles. But that’s genuinely where my critique ends. Stop reading my review and just go there.

This is a 5-star review (no rating for atmosphere as this was a takeaway). I had fishcakes, chips and peas. Wife had chips and fish bites. Son had the Billy Murg Special. And, for good measure, we got scraps, too. Honestly we didn't need to - it felt like they were respawning in the box... those scraps were endless. No qualms in saying this was the best fish and chips I've had in a long time. The fishcakes were yummy - really tasty. Fish bites were huge and tasty, too. Chips were well cooked. We bought for dinner, but ended up saving half to the following day and having dinner (part 2) from the leftovers. And we still didn't finish it all. Per head, it wouldn't have been cheap for one meal, but we easily had enough for two - and would return without hesitation the next time we're in the area.

The staff were really friendly and did a great job. The big haddock was cooked to order but they apologised for the wait. The wait wasn’t long at all. Plus it’s well worth it for fresh food. The “Big ‘Un” is certainly big. I wanted to save a section for my mum anyway but you’ll definitely be full of you order this. And the flavour of the haddock was superb. There’s no skin on it but it loses none of the flavour through size or lack of skin. The mushy peas were the best mushy peas I’ve had and the curry sauce was very good with just the right amount of kick to it. This is the best fish and chips in England. I’ve been trying to find out which place was the best for a few years. This is the one.
