I had some friends visiting from abroad and they wanted to sample a good British Fish and Chips. So I naturally thought about taking them to Bretts, since I've been coming for over 13 years.
Normally I just use the take away from the side, but this time I thought I'd take them to the restaurant. I wish I didn't now.
As soon as we walked though the door, I felt very uncomfortable. The gentleman (who I can only assume is the manager) obviously didn't want us to be there.
We felt very rushed, I mean you could call it 'efficient' but we were served so fast we didn't a chance to settle down first.
Everytime I said thank you that he did something, like taken the plates, not even a 'no problem' or 'your welcome' or a 'thank you back'.
I've never felt such distain from someone serving us.
The food was still however excellent, and despite the service, my friends said "it was the best fish and chips they ever had and now they are spoilt and would be able to enjoy fish and chips anywhere else.
What really confirmed that it was just us that he didn't like, was when another couple came in shirt and tied, he was more entertaining and even laughed. Even the girls serving us were better mannered than he was.
I'm really sorry Bretts that you have such a person working for you. I'm both dissapointed of the service and embarrassed that I took my friends.
I'm sure if he was to read this he would be delighted to hear that i will not be taking myself or any of my friends to the restaurants in the future.
To any one wanting to go. I would recommend using the takeaway part...
Read moreIf I could give zero stars for a rating I would but then my review wouldn't appear. The take away side is convenient in Headingly when out late but to be fair you might as well make the walk to anyone of the billion other take away places that aren't that far away in hyde park or even closer the ones down the road by the spar, which are open later and most offer more choice. Anywhere else is also more affordable and a lil bit more value for money. Eg meal deals for one. The restaurant side isn't anything to shout about as well. Very dark, nothing interesting and has about as much atmosphere as a funeral (and considering the age of some of the patrons it looks like a funeral could happen sooner than you think with some of them). I also used to pop in on a mate that had the misfortune to work there once as well. The owner (some irish lady is the only distinguishing thing I can remember about her) treats her staff like something she's scrapped of her shoe so it's understandable why many of the employees don't have a grin on their face or add much to the atmosphere. Plus to top it all of after hearing a few stories about the amount of rats around the back and the owner of the building turning up drunk at night demanding chips and making a state of the place. It's kind of left me not to keen on getting food there unless I'm bordering on starvation. Even then I'd...
Read moreWhat a smashing evening! Staying in the nearby Hinsley Hall, we decided to wander into Headingley for dinner rather than the city centre. I’m so glad we did. We received a very warm welcome from Vanessa, and despite it being quiet the atmosphere was friendly and the music a pleasant volume — no hushed tones required as we chatted. We enjoyed scallops, gravalax, lamp rump and confit duck leg, with a lemon cheesecake to end the meal. All the dishes were outstanding, the cured salmon being my favourite and my husband’s opinion of the lamb was It being one of the best things he’s ever eaten. Praise indeed! The wine list was extensive and very reasonably priced. We enjoyed a bottle of Albariño and from a purely selfish point of view, I appreciated cider being available on draught too, because I’m dead classy(!). I cannot recommend No 14 enough, amongst student living and Otley Run pubs, there truly is a...
