After three weeks of vigilance post diagnosis, the first place my partner has inadvertently consumed gluten was at the self proclaimed "100% gluten free restaurant".
The food, to be clear was not only safe, but delicious. We really enjoyed our dishes. There's a very canny mind behind the menu which walks a line between novel flavour combinations and elevated classics.
It was a real relief to relax and know we were in a safe environment, and my partner ordered one of three beers on the menu. There were no gluten free labels on the drinks, but why would there be, there were none on the food either. The presumption that the beer was gluten free seemed safe in an environment that boastfully caters to coeliac clientele. Gluten free beers are readily available in most good bars these days anyhow.
Halfway through our mains my partner began to feel unwell. When we spoke the woman who'd been serving us, I was shocked. "We're sorry, no the drinks are not gluten free. You'll know for next time." As my partner slowly broke into tears in front of me at the table, the notion of a return visit was very presumptive.
Mistakes happen. But to not label gluten filled products in an environment you've advertised as 100% safe is irresponsible.
I've worked for too long within hospitality to ask and hector staff for money off a bill or to solicit favours. But we were offered no comfort, no offer to redress the damage. Not even the beer off the bill. It was awkward, and rather callous.
We've had to cancel the rest of our plans, as we were in route to a concert. Very disappointed....
Read moreMy friends and I just described our experience at the restaurant. And of course, the wrong email address is our fault but if you will read our complaint more carefully you will find out is not just about the reservation but is more about the staff, how they deal with it and how they were acting when we went to the restaurant. If they will say that they don't have our reservation and try to find out why or at least say anything, we will probably leave the restaurant and forget about the whole situation.
And OMG. Your 'how to deal with customers complaint' skills are amazing. Congratulations!
Edit: Rude service, staff was miraculously surprised that someone walked inside asking for a table that was booked. When we explained that we had booked a table they were very reluctant to even query what would be the reason that we did not get the table. The staff was too full of themselves to even greet us upon arrival. We did not get a unified response why our booking was not there and we had to leave just because it was at this time fully booked. Question from the owner perfectly describes the circumstance. Do not dine there, you will not even get a chance.
The staff was rude. no communication. They looked at us weird with no explanation. I do not...
Read moreWe recently dined at The Oxford Place in Leeds for the first time since the restaurant changed hands. I'm very pleased to report that it is still offering fantastic and 100% gluten free food.
My wife and I had two meals there - Friday and Saturday evening - and the food and service was excellent.
It was nice that both meals were preceded an appetiser / amuse-bouche too. We had Gazpacho soup on Friday and Bruschetta on Saturday.
I had the Ham Hock Terrine followed by the Pork Belly. The main course was served with the biggest piece of crackling I've ever seen!
On our return visit I started with some Oysters, followed by the cheeseburger. The burger and the skinny fries were wonderful and very tasty.
After having starters and mains on Friday were were unable to fit in a dessert. But we did leave room for pudding on the Saturday. The Sticky Toffee Pudding was absolutely brilliant. And a very large portion. It was delicious.
Both meals were top notch and we're already looking forward to returning later...
